have you got a magnetic drain plug? have you cut any of your oil filters open? when you have metal to metal contact , its best to find it before it shows you what it can do to your motor.

Honestly, if it was a lifter, I think you'd know. Youd hear it on that particular stud for sure. I thought mine was a lifter, but then could not find a noisier stud. Then when I did the cam, I thouroughly inspected every lifter and the roller tip, checked to make sure none of them were tighter than others to push on the plunger or looser. Found nothing. They look like brand new. It's more an embarressing thing, than anything else at this point. Im not afraid something is going to let loose. I pound on it when I take it out. Im confident its something stupid but whatever ??? I remember some people saying they had a tick with PaceSetter headers, just throwing that out there cause I think we ALL are running Pace Setter LT's ...

That was going to be my next question, wondering if there is some kind of weird resonance in the headers, since it pretty much goes away when I am on dirt. I have a friend with pacesetters on his car but he doesnt have the tick.

Im going to replace the lifters just for peice of mind.

Ive cut open a filter and found no metal in it.

I am going through this same problem with mine. thinking the problem was with my comp "R" series lifters, I replaced them last night with new gmpp lifters. still same noise. the tick is barly there when it is cold and gets to it's loudest after it gets to normal temp. mine also has L.E2 heads, comp pro mag 1.6rr, comp 986 springs, guide plates, and a comp 305h cam. does yours some time go away and then come back?

I'm still running manifolds and I've checked for vacuum leaks.

It makes me feel a lot better seeing that other people have this mysterious tick as well I thought I was hearing things that werent there

Mine never goes away. It is non-existant when I first start it, but within 30 seconds I can start to hear it. And from then on, it doesnt go away. Not obnoxiously loud or anything, but its there.

I forgot to mention that I used that screw driver trick with the car running and the driverside valve cover off and found a noisey rocker, I tightened it down and it never got any quieter.

Im hoping maybe there is a bad lifter there. Ill have the LS7 lifters tomorrow and Ill see what happens

after i got home from work i pulled off my valve covers and used a automotive steathascope going across each rocker stud and found #7 intake was much louder than the rest, no mater where you ajusted it at it never changed, then i removed the rocker and found side to side play in the valve to guide with the spring still assembled. then removed another intake rocker and found a big differance between the two. i am 100% sure my noise is a worn out valve guide. again mine also has le2 heads and 1.6r comp pro mags with guide plates. wondering if there is a pattern here with this combo, or we just have valvetrain geometry problems, reguardless i will be pulling my heads this weekend and having all the valves and guides checked or replaced.

Odd, my number 7 intake valve was also the noisy one, Probably just a coincidence. I havent noticed any movement though.

how long after the build did it take for the noise to come in? mine was quiet for the first 200 miles. i also noticed the idle seemed change some. it sounds like it has a cam in it when its cold and quiet. when its warm and ticking it sounds like its sick. but performs very well still!

Its hard for me to tell, its been doing it for a long time, and before this i was dealing with header leaks so it was probably doing it then too.

Like probably a couple years or about 12,000 miles. Im finnally fed up with it.
