loud pop after cam install

im getting a really loud pop from my engine when i put any stress on it. i just finnished installing a gm 847 camshaft, pac 918 springs with pro mag rockers.

and it looks like the crank pully is not centered. i do have a underdrive pulley behind it. the belt stays on tho.

it pops every once in a while, like maybe 1 cylinder is causing it.

could a wrong preload on one of the rocker arms cause this?

any ideas as to what to check?

what are some common issues after a cam install?

is it like a backfire kind of pop? did you install your timing chain correctly? plug wires put on the right cylinders or on the opti correctly? did you install the opti correctly? could be an endless list of things. start with the obvious. is your car running on a stock tune? if it is the computer is probably freaking out with that big *** 847 cam. that could be causing it to pop

i did the dot to dot with the timing. when you match the dots, it doesnt matter which cylinder is tdc does it? 1 or 6. i want to buy some new plug wires cause i noticed on 2 of the ends that plug into the opti are going bad, dont think they were ever put on all the way. they are talor spyro pros.

i set the cam dowl into the correct opti slot. all my wires are in the correct order

its the stock tune from my 96 SS. my 97 SS had already been tuned before for my mods, and its getting redone right now.

with the right tune, im sure it will idle fine by itself, and stop shaking like a bitch, i think thats the ballancer pulley doing that. i'm going to pull it off tomorrow and see if notice anything wrong with the way it looks from underneath

by timing, do you mean the dots being off, or the pcm retarding it really bad, pulling false knock?

it matters big time. your camshaft will be completely off with the piston. you might be 180* out. also make sure your plug wires are on all the way like you said. that could be the problem right there. the hub pulley will have nothing to do withthe shaking. LT1's are internally balanced

no

recheck all the rocker arms.

is it a dead miss? I would have put new plugs/wire when you did the cam....

but they need to be done. does not need to be a high dollar plug wires either. We have used the cheapest damn ones you can get from auto parts stores and won races.

theres your problem, i would not even try running a car with a cam without a new tune. Stock tune with 847 = no no

so i must have the right cyl at tdc because i was driving the car. well i was going to. it runs but ants to die if i let it idle.

so i'll replace my plugs and wait for my pcm to get back. and redo my rocker arm adjustments.

the install went pretty smooth. i didnt know you had to have a specific piston at tdc to install the cam dowel at 3 0'clock. lucky thats not the prob, or my front cover would be conning back off. dont want to do that

is there an easy way to check to make sure i have #6 tdc with the cam dowel at 3 o clock?

how would this effect performance?

2 of the plugs on the pass side(2,6) were in pretty bad shape. 1/2 the connector is missing.

it could possibly cause a miss if it wasnt arcing over and getting good spark which could also cause a "pop" kinda sound on occasion

fixed it. add me to the list of dumbasses cause i had 5 and 7 reversed. i have number 5 going overtop the headser and 7 tucked to the block. i plugged them in based on memory. i though 7 was the one i have up top.

runs with hesitation now due to stock tune. but idles fine and sounds great
