oil pressure increasing rapidly, meaning say you are at 40psi & you press the gas to idle say at 2000, & right away it jumps to say 70psi & then quickly to around 50 or so ussually means bad bearings, psi decreasing with rpm might be a bad pump or you're ussing too thick/thin of oil, try running thinner oil & see what happens, this is caused by the Pressure regulator on the pump either being bad or just doing its job but the oil is too thick/thin, I fergot which one, I think its if its too thick though. Also, try using a different brand oil filter, since the oil filter acts as an oil pressure regulator aswell.

Hope this helps & some of you don't feel so bad about your engines

We'll guy's, Tomorrow I'll try changing my oil and putting some dino 5w-30 in with a stock ac delco filter. If that doesn't help I think I might replace the pump. What would be a good replacement for the pump? I don't need a pan gasket because its rubber right?

I run Castrol 5-30 with AC Delco Filter or a X2 filter.. does it with either filter...

We'll It looks like I'll be forgeting the idea of changing my oil and filter. Should I just not worry about it? I was reading one post were a guy has had it for 2 years and still hasn't had any problems.

WS6Formula? Please keep us posted as to your results as I'm very curious to know your problem as well. Had the same thing happen to me and looking at my bearings they went bye bye. Did you notice your engine temps raise ever so slightly before you tore it down?

Thanks!

ZBLKHELLRZR What were your symptoms? How many miles do you have on it? How much do you abuse it?

took the car to the shop today, but they're sending it out for some body work & wont be able to to get to it for a couple weeks.

The car has the stock pan & stock pump, he said he'd probably end up putting a different pan & pump on.

Yeah, I met 97Bowtie a year or two ago, his name is Daniel, right? Nice guy

So a new pan/pump will supposedly fix the problem?

I don't know, not yet at least. It's going back at the end of the month & he's going to do some more testing on it to see what the deal is...

hopefully just a pan & pump will fix it.

I had 6K on it. My main problem was cylinder wash from some bad programming. I changed the oil one time and it was literally 50/50 oil and gas! Surprised it lasted as long as it did! The thing that killed it wasn't the bearings though it was sabatoge. Some a hole threw a screw in my intake when I had the ram air box off for repainting at a drag/car show. Almost made it home when it went adios.

I only had 12 passes on it and mostly just autobahn blasts w/ AMG SL 55's, 911TT's, RS4's, and RS6's, M5's. 550 Ferrari's etc...

I'm suprised no one used the search button for this. Here is what is going on, as if it is a simple awsner.

The LT1s have a big problem with oil pump cavitation (sucking air not oil) especially when they are modified. No oil=bearing wear, I dusted off a brand new motor from Ed Bilmar not knowing that it was a problem - I used the philosophy that "as long as its above 25PSI I am okay. Well, I should have listend to my gut becuase I had no cam bearings left and the mains needed some help as well.

I did a complete rebuild with a Canton Pan. I started to have the problem again but not half as bad on the new motor. I spoke with Ed's shop again and they told me to goto a 15w 50 ( I was running 10w 40). It helped 10X's with the drop in oil pressure and wouldn't go below 50PSI apposed to 30PSI on the 10W untill I really started attacking. When the oil temps started climbing past 260 the PSI started dropping even on the 15w-50.

Cliff Notes

1. Stock pan/pumps cavitate especially when you use a HV oil pump

2. If your oil temps are too hot, it will cause a great loss of pressure on the high end.

Adding oil is not a solution, windage increases causing more heat, more heat = thinner oil = lower PSI
