Losing oil pressure at low RPMs
Losing oil pressure at low RPMs
This just started yesterday on my way home from work. Noticed the pressure would drop to nothing when the RPMs dropped below 1k. As long as it stays above 1k everything is fine. I've got two guesses the first being the obvious oil pump failure. My second is something I read about a while back about oil filters failing (some sort of check valve or something) causing a similar condition.
Going to change the lube and throw on a new filter shortly but I'm hoping someone has a little input for me.
Changing an oil pump to find out a bad filter caused the problem might be as bad as pulling the tranny to find out I busted another 10-bolt. No need to go there.

Re: Losing oil pressure at low RPMs
what kind of filters do you use????.......if its a fram change it and put something else in there!!!!!.....i use K&N and have had nothing but great oil pressure with them!!!......i would rule out the oil pump for now since you get pressure at rpms about 1000.....your filter is probably clogged......good luck and keep us posted
Re: Losing oil pressure at low RPMs
I've got a Purolator (Pure One) in it right now. Will try a K&N next. I've used Fram for years (father is a Fram distributor) and haven't had a problem with them although I have seen all the posts about them and the low quality materials used in manufacturing.
Re: Losing oil pressure at low RPMs
CHeck your oil pressure sending unit (94,95 on back of intake or around there) my was cracked and wasnt reading correctly, about the same as you describe, i started flipping out, but turned out to be only a 20 part and oil pressure was really fine.
Re: Losing oil pressure at low RPMs
Ended up putting on an AC Delco PF454 and some new oil and it seems okay now. If I see it again I check the sender. I remember one time I was at the track and broke the sender...didn't know it and had it towed home ($150) only to find it was a $20 fix and I could have driven home.
