Here's what I did. Removed ac, made a custom aluminum braket and moved alternator where ac was, (lower left corner, makes it great to take off the pass side valve cover.) Put power steering in orginal location, and used the original belt adjuster but moved it to where the alternator orginally was. Basicly just to have a way to keep pressure on the belt. Takes a little fabrication but sure makes it nice.

Krazwag,

What you have described is a similar design in which I have been working on. The stock tensionor isn't being used though as I felt it could be an issue with belts being thrown especially on high rpm motors due to it not being flanged and the power steering isn't flanged. I am also incorporating the lower relocation bracket currently fabricated into the equation with a few variences so that at any time, if anyone wants to change over to that setup, it will be done without the additional purchasing of any parts.

Time is a factor for me. I thought I would have had testing done with it but have't had the time yet to complete it . I am working on it though. I apologize for the delay.

Steve

Well, I finally had a chance to work on the car this weekend. My goal was to relocate the alternator to the lower drivers side of the motor and retain the PS and AC in their original location. I fabbed a bracket to mount the alternator where the smog pump used to be and it is driven off of the stock harmonic balancer which is used in a "piggyback" configuration with a March underdrive pulley. The underdrive pulley is still running the AC and PS. I used an idler pulley where the alternator was originally. Not only are valve cover issues taken care of, now I can drop one belt at the track and only the alternator will be driven by the crank(similar to the LS1 cars running the "short belt" setup. Every little bit helps.... If anyone is interested, I can send you some pics.

I've had to put this project on the backburner. I have a working model, I just haven't had time to get something in the production phase yet.

Another twist, kind of a spin-off of Camaro SS's idea.

How about mounting the alternator in the lower driver's side and fabbing up a bracket to retain the a/c and power steering in their stock locations. They key objective would be clearing up LOTS of space underhood by ditching the stock bracket.

Camaro SS's set-up sounds nice, but still retains the factory bracket. Some of us need as much room as possible in that location

Exclamation Pics Posted

I've got a few pics of the relocated alternator up on my web page. I did not have the car on a lift so the pics aren't the best. I got as much as I could in the photos. The bracketry I used is only temporary. I will be replacing it shortly with .25" x 1.5" solid flat bar. So far, it is working great. I've driven a couple hundred miles and made several 6,800 rpm shifts with no belt issues. I can simply remove the A/C, P/S belt and run the alternator only. The motor revs much quicker when running the short belt only. Also, as you can see in the pic, the taller valve cover clearance issue is resolved. Of course it would be nice to be able to do away with the entire bulky factory accessory bracket, but that would be QUITE a chore. If anyone is interested in moving their alternator, email me and I will give you more detailed info as to what to use and how to fab the brackets up.
