Chevy, how do you like the 3.42s with the auto? What track difference did it make? Im thinking of swapping in a 6spd rear. I would think more auto guys would throw the 3.42 rear in for a little pickup instead of dropping $$ for the 3.73 and install.

3.73s are better than 3.42s...and there is no cost difference.
Re: list of bolt-ons to get to high 12s low 13s.
you guys make it seem really easy to get 12s with stock internals and a few boltons. I got 13.8 @ 102 with boltons!
if I wanted high 12s out of an automatic stock internal LT1 I would do:
long tubes
true duals with bullets
good cold air intake
!AIR, !EGR, !A/C, !spare tire, !jack, !rear seats
lightweight drag wheels
BFG DRs or better
3500 rpm stall torque converter
tranny cooler
4.10s
pray that the 10 bolt holds up or run a 12 bolt
some sort of a drag oriented suspension (I know nothing about suspension)
LT4 knock module
dyno tune
if that didnt get me there I'd add:
maybe some 1.7 roller rockers and valve springs
58mm throttle body

He's refering to a 3.42 as a 6spd rear.
Re: list of bolt-ons to get to high 12s low 13s.
headers, converter, CAI, gears, sticky tires. if you arent a very good driver to get it with that, do a custom tune and good CB exhaust. would be hard NOT to get high 12's to low 13's. My car managed to get mid-high 13's with the free mods (TB bypass, iat sensor mod), 40$ b & M shift improver kit, flowmaster muffler, CAI, and a ported MAF. Headers, gears, and converter will make the biggest difference.
Re: list of bolt-ons to get to high 12s low 13s.
I don't think there is really one answer. There are a lot of variations in LT1's. Some people get boltons and are barely in the 13's while I have only suspension and am in the 13's and other people stock make it in the 13's. Your best bet would be CAI, headers, exhaust, tune, and some drag radials. That should put you really low 13's high 12's. If you want to spend some more money, put a gear in the car.

ZRed is correct. I was referring to swapping in a 3.42 rear (from M6) rather than buying 3.73s and paying for the install. Swapping rears would be cheaper which is why I asked the question.

Every once in a while a rear with 3.73s comes up on the for sale board. Keep an eye on it.

My 97 ran a 13.79 at 100.04 mph with a slow reaction of 1.148 ( I was eating a sandwich) engine was stock, (83,000 miles) 3.23 gears, auto, K&N air intake, stock street tires.
Upgrades this year 1.6 LT4 roller rockers and 100 to 150 shot NOS. Going to track on the 29th. Will post times if the engine holds up.

Re: list of bolt-ons to get to high 12s low 13s.
Hitting 12's with all the boltons would be really easy. Right now I have:
Stock air box and filter
Jet Hot LT's (no real gain, maybe 1 mph)
Cutout on stock catback
1.7rr's
Skinnies and Et streets on stock 16" rims
!MAF screen
Pulled out back seats
The cutout and rr's combined gained me 4 mph and the skinnies got me about 2 mph. If I had some 4.10's I would easily be running mid 12's, but I don't really have the cash for a 9" right now.
