Lifters possibly damaged?

Lifters possibly damaged?
I have a spare set of lifters, the contact surface where they slide into the block has a speckeled look. Its as if the shiny part flaked or wore off and the dull metal underneth is showing. I dont want to reuse them because they might put metal into the oil, has anyone seen this happen?
