Leaking Oil!!

I have a 95 Z28 with the Lt1 with 150,000 miles on it and NO rebuild and i bought it for a thousand bucks...I was told it was the back seals that were the problem and it just spits oil right out of the motor...making the car non-drivable. How much would this cost in parts and do myself? I'm new to the chevy crowd and not too sure where to look. Either a rebuild or new motor is coming soon but I need the car drivable before then. Thanks for your help guys.

Rear main seal is cheap to fix, but lots and lots of labor. Easiest way is to drop the tranny.

Intake is also cheap. Takes ~2 hours

First thing to do would be to find out exactly where the oil is leaking

there are several possiblityies

reach back past the intake and see if you can feel oil behind the intake, on the top of the trans if your arm is small enough

if that is dry, fill the oil up to the full mark, then start the car, if it is coming out fasst, it should be easy to find, if slow, turn it off, clean it all real good(engine degreaser, ect.), then start it and check again, if it is still hard to tell, get a U/V leak detection kit from ma local parts store, follow the instuctions

of the possible leaks, rear main is probably the hardest to fix

Dont pull the motor, that's silly. Drop the transmission and get it with the motor in the car.

Get the seal locally...I got mine at Autozone for $17.

Like Spinner said, just pull the tranny to get to the seal.

I agree w/the above, try to get your seal locally, and when you do it, pull the tranny, it'll be much easier, though still a pain.

Once upon a time...

Withing the last 10 years i bought a Chevy S-10 for $800 "because the rear main and oil pan gasket leaked" I put it on a lift and with a couple other eyes confirmed the intake was not leaking and it HAD TO BE the the rear main. I figured for $800 I could work on it quite a bit. So i drove it to the car was spent 45 minutes getting as much oil as i could off the bottom of the truck. Then drove home right to the garage on ramps. About an hour later I decieded it may be cool enough to start pulling the tranny to change the rear main. As i was poking around figuring out how the linkage came off a fresh drop of oil land on my forehead from the oil sending unit. I replaced the sending unit and valve cover gaskets for GP for under $20 and drove the truck another 5 years with no leaks. So you might check the simple stuff first. On the lt1 the oil sender is at the back of the motor up high and i would think if it was puking oil it may look like a rear main leak. Just my 2 pennies.
