Leakdown or Compression test??
Leakdown or Compression test??
Which one should I do since I think I might have a blown head gasket? I know the leakdown is supposed to be more accurate or something but I can't find one here in town I can use today. The stores only have the compression testers. I also need as much info about replacing the head gaskets as possible
. Thanks guys!

Re: Leakdown or Compression test??
It's a toss up if either one will show the problem. For example if the gasket is bad between a water passage hole and an oil gallery hole, neither tester will show you a thing. But that is rare. Compression testing is ok but a leakdown tester will tell you which item is causing the low compression. If a valve is bad, it will be heard at either the intake or exhaust. The results of the leak down test can be seen other ways. If the head gasket is blown from the cylinder to a water jacket, bubbles could possibly be seen in the coolant system. But for that matter, that type of blown gasket problem would be visible with a coolant pressure pump as well. There are many ways to find a head gasket problem. The key when fixing them is to have the heads checked for flatness. Depending on the age of the heads, the valves should be at least lapped in. It may be a good idea to check them for leaks like pressure testing also.
Re: Leakdown or Compression test??
Yeah I'm going to work on getting them off during the week. I will definatley have them checked and go from there. I just hope the bottom end can stand the freshened top end after it's all said and done.
