Last question on a 94 optispark

About ready to install my optispark.

Looking at the install guides no one mentions RTV or anything.

Do I just clean off the timing cover and install it? (Put a little oil on the seal..) Do I put some RTV around the optispark?

If not, why not? Wouldn't it keep the water out?

Thanks!

I installed the MSD cap and rotor kit on my '93, it called for RTV around the o-ring but then again it converts it to a sealed unit with a vacuum line and a hose for fresh air. Shouldn't hurt? On '93's and '94's they should have 3 small drain holes on the bottom if any moisture accumulates inside it. Don't forget to take off the cap and apply locktite to the rotor screws!!

I got the one from thepartsladi, the $300 doller delphi one, do I still need to do the locktite? Anyone have a guide for this?

Thanks.

Yes. Open the case (remove cap) and loc-tite the two small screws that hold the rotor on. If you don't do that, they may fall out in just a few miles.

If I was putting in an OEM Gen I opti, I would RTV the sides and top.

Don't RTV the bottom - moisture needs a path to escape.

It's very simple, just remove the screws holding the two halves of the opti together and you'll see the rotor in the center. The rotor is held on by two tiny screws, remove those and apply a dab of red loc-tite on them. Reinstall the rotor screws and replace the cap of the opti and apply RTV around the rubber o-ring. Do not apply RTV to the three drain holes in the bottom of the unit.

Here are the MSD instructions I went off of when converting my '93 to a vented opti:

The rubber O ring?? Not sure where the heck this rubber o ring is. Do you mean the seal in the timing cover?

Mabye that's why the previous opti screwed up so quickly, I didn't have an o ring.

Bump, anyone know about this rubber o ring? Wanting to install but don't want to put on sans o ring.

As far as I know there's *no* seal or o-ring or anything for the opti, correct?

There is a thin seal where the cap fits into the groove on the body. On the OEM parts that I have looked at, its a thin white gasket that appears to be a silicon gasket. On the MSD, I believe MSD uses an O-ring around the outside diameter of the body, that the caps slips over.

Oh! So there's no seal/gasket that goes between the opti and the timing cover correct? It's a seal/gasket between the opti cap, and the opti rotor?

(It will be bare metal to bare metal from opti to the timing cover?)

And if that's the case, where do I put the RTV?? Between the timing cover and opti? Or between the opti cover and opti cap??

Sorry, just want to be sure I'm not missing a seal or anything!

Thanks!

The opti just slides up against the timing cover, no sealant required.
