Large valve springs and head studs-clearance problems! pics!!

What do I do? The large valve springs are interfering with the washers for my arp head studs. Is it ok to just grind a little on each side of the washers, so they sit down on the head and clear the springs/seats?

There is only one on each side that has a problem.

I have heard of people doing it with no adverse effects, however, can you drop the washer in first, then put the bolt through it, into the hole?

Yes, grind a flat on both sides, and you are going to need 12pt nuts for those, as the hex socket will not fit.

Kind of defeats the purpose of the perfect flat washers though doesn't it?

No, it's still flat on the top & bottom & w/ sealent will seal perfectly. If u don't listen to me listen to machinistone he has build way more engines than most of us ever will.

You grind the corners off not the mating surface.

Take the edge off by moving the washer in a figure 8 pattern, flat on a machine stone, sandpaper on something flat...etc. Then it will be fine.

The figure 8, or any other similar pattern keeps you from putting deep lines in something you are lapping.

Crap. I was going to bring home a thin wall socket in hopes that would work. The outside nuts are really close to the springs too. I guess I could just go buy some grade 8 12pt nuts and use them?

I have always made the washer flat on the sides so it will fit in between the springs.

Hopefullt the socket will fit between the springs and if not, the 12 point might be needed.

No, do not use hardware store bolts.

It takes very little material removal to make it fit. So no worries as so many others have mentioned.
