Knock sensor install torque spec...

Knock sensor install torque spec...

Still chasing KR.

Someone suggested that running the KS as loose as possible will help reduce KR. Also I am confused as to whether teflon tape helps or hurts.

Does anyone know the torque spec for installing the knock sensor and have a comment on the teflon tape?
I know mine is rather tight.

15 lb. ft. for the knock sensor. I don't see the harm in a couple of wraps of teflon tape to help it seal.

Wow I know I have over torqued the sensor now, I will loosen it up some tomorrow. Damn I hope that helps with the KR problem.

I ldid, too. Tightened it like a pipe plug the first time. A while ago I loosened & hand-retorqued mine as part of my KS chasing, but no help.

Part of testing the KS is confirming the sensor body has good electrical contact with the block. I think teflon tape could mess that up if there is enough to add some cushion between the threads. I do NOT know if the sensor will still make good electrical contact with teflon tape, I'm just raising a potential issue. Has anybody checked for this?

Update:
I just could not wait till tomorrow so off to the garage I went.

My KS was big time loose, enough to turn without a tool. I am positive that when I installed it I torqued it well so somehow it loosened up in just a few days. I torqued it to 15# so I will no tomorrow if it helped.

The comment regarding the Teflon tape causing the sensor to not ground is very plausible. I wonder if the damn thing can actually be too loose and exposed to resonance and vibes?

The metal of the threads are going to cut through some of the tape (if you don't overdo it), so I would think it would make contact ok. All you have to do is use a meter to see if it is grounding ok. The other thought is whether the tape creates a "cushion" that dampens the transmission of actual knock.

Update:
After finding that the KS was very loose, I torqued it down to 15#. I now have nearly 0 KR all the time in NON-WOT conditions. There was an occasional spike from 2-3 KR but it quickly recovered.

I have not hammered on it yet but I soon shall. My guess is I will still get that spike to 5 during off gas shifts same as before. Maybe it will be gone.

If I still have KR and can play with the newer LT4 KM and the tunes a bit more.

Not sure where I read before not to use teflon tape.. I just use teflon sealant paste.

I have read about the tape being good and bad, wo Knows for sure.
I was correct regarding WOT, I am spiking to 4-5 KR just like before but it is still fast. Slowly making some progress though.

Just find a good tuner, I was chasing my KR down for months and when I got tuned I never get it anymore. And I'm using teflon tape on the KS.

Thats in the works, I would do it right this second if i could. However there is not one anywhere near where I live that knows the LT1. Might be another month or two before it happens. I can go to louisville but they want $400 which sounds pricey to me. maybe that is fair,I have never been dyno tuned before.

I can rent the local Super Flow dyno for $125.00 an hour, again its just getting the tuner to come from Eastern KY thats the problem.

I also figure that since the current tune is getting closer with the help of you guys, the dyno tune should be quick and pain free.

I agree that the teflon tape "should" not be a problem. But as it is commonly used as an insulator for electric wires and your having problems, I would definitely do a continuity check between the sensor and the block. And check the block to chasis ground while your at it, just to eleminate them as a possibility.
