Keeping Flywheel From Spinning

I'm replacing my flywheel tomorrow during my clutch install. Silly question for everybody. What is the best way to keep the flywheel from spinning while I tork off the flywheel bolts? Figure it is better to ask than break something.

They sell a tool that will hold it from turning. Engages the teeth on the flywheel and works well.

Or you could do what lots of people have done. Twist an old rag or towel and set it between the starter and the flywheel. Feed it so the direction you want to turn the bolts pulls more of the rag into the gap. It'll jam the flywheel and you can tighten away with no problems. Turn the flywheel the other way and the rag falls right out...

Rag in the starter. See now that's the kind of thing you just never find in a book. Glad I headed over here to ask. Thanks.

I use a very small clamp. I fit it on the left side(facing flywheel). You don't clamp the flat face of the flywheel(big no, no), just the beveled edge around it....between the teeth and flat face. It will catch the left edge of the block and stop it from turning.

My dad tears down outboard engines all the time. He uses an extractor which bolts onto the flywheel and has a handle. Then he puts the socket wrench on and hits the end of it lose with a hammer as he holds the extractor. It looks kind of like this but with a handle out the side, he got it ages ago though.

Oops, in my post I was thinking about tightening them. I guess the "torque" in the OP's post threw me off. To remove them, I use an impact.
