K&N oil filter is Stuck on my '95 Z!
K&N oil filter is Stuck on my '95 Z!
A simple oil change has gone wrong! I usually use an M1-302 filter, never had a problem. This is my second go at a K&N long filter, and I had no issue with the first one. Today is different, for onething,I walked past a penny on my driveway and deliberately didn't pick it up for luck. The convenient welded nut will not hold the wrench as I apply force.I put a conventional squeeze wrench on it,and there is some deforimty,no leaks, but it didn't turn either. I used the channel lock on the nut,and have not been able to turn it yet. Now the nut on the filter is deformed.I am really pissed! I installed the K&N per their instructions,so why can't I get this thing off? My crankcase is now empty, and I might have to fill with fresh oil to get to work tomorrow? Has anybody already come up with a sure fire way to get this filter off? Without using a firearm?
Re: K&N oil filter is Stuck on my '95 Z!
I have heard of using a long screw driver and piercing the filter to remove it and using the exposed ends to twist it off. It works from what I hear, but you won't be able to do much with the car, if for some reason it is stuck.
Re: K&N oil filter is Stuck on my '95 Z!
take a piece of sandpaper and grip the filter with your hand. Twist as hard as you can.
Did you remember to oil the rubber ring on the filter before you installed it? If you did, I hope you did not tighten the filter using a wrench on the nut. It should be hand tight only.
Use the sandpaper and let me know how that works. If you aren't strong enough, try finding a friend with strong hands to turn it. I'm sure it will come off this way.

That was helpful.
Seriously, the first thing to remember is that you are under the car. The tendency is to rotate it the wrong direction. I have used the screwdriver method before. Just remember which direction to rotate. If the bar is pointed to the rear driver's side wheel, rotate it to the front driver's side wheel, or clockwise.

Yes righty tighty lefty loosey is always good to remember. If you can't get it off with a wrench chances are you won't be able to remove it by hand. I would use a filter strap wrench AND a wrench on the nut at the same time. One of the reasons removing the oil filter berfore draining the crankcase is always good practice.

I like these way better than the screwdriver method.

Not so sure about that. I've changed literally hundreds (maybe "thousands"??) of filters over a 55 year period. Actually got paid for doing it for 10 years in a garage, working my way through college. Never had a problem until one day the K&N on my Formula decided it didn't want to come off. I ended up taking the hex cap style removal tool, drilling holes in all 6 sides, and using six sheet metal screws to attach it to the bottom of the filter. Filter started to twist and collapse, but with an 18" breaker bar on the nut, the filter finally broke loose.
It was the crappy Fram filter... the threads were galled and refused to break loose. Gasket was lubed before install, installation was hand tight, and was only on there for a couple months. Never had that problem before, and that was the last Fram filter I bought - about 12 years ago, before I searched the internet and found out how poorly made the Fram filters were. Never had that problem again using AC Delco, and Moroso.
I doubt the K&N had a similar problem, but who knows?

Re: K&N oil filter is Stuck on my '95 Z!
Thanks for all the tips! The next day I just got the channel locks again, and squeezed for all it was worth, and it started to come loose. Now there's a long
M1-302 hanging there. I do smear oil on the gasket, and I only tighten just short of one turn. The K&N went about 4500 miles in the summer heat,so maybe the gasket just stuck too well. The next K&N I use will be tightened to 3/4 turn instead. thanks, and all is well, edman

Re: K&N oil filter is Stuck on my '95 Z!
ptown... latex gloves and some muscle usually does the trick for me. Even on friends cars where the filter was on pretty tight and a wrench did not work. Just something else to try before you start hacking up the filter and spilling oil all over the place. If it's a k&n 3002 you will be able to get a good grip on it with your hands.
Re: K&N oil filter is Stuck on my '95 Z!
I have been changing oil filters myself for over two hundred thousand miles! One turn means one turn past gasket contact to face.I have never failed to smear oil on a filter gasket. The thing about K&N filters, and I use all the long sizes only on my Z28,is that their welded on nut is a sheet metal stamping of a nut,it has a slight taper that will not hold a wrench under force. And,the installation force is always a fraction of the removal force. I probably will use another K&N, but I'll extra lube it, and install it a little looser than instructed.
