put a screw driver through it and use the driver as a leverage handle. or oil filter pliers.

done that a few times myself. Never failed.

I've had better luck with a cold chisel and a big hammer. Hit right on the bead where the top part of the filter is crimped to the bottom at an angle in the direction to unscrew.
