K&N air filter for 97 SS?
Hey guys,
I just purchased a 97 ss. The guy I got it from had a K&N air filter, but was not using it. I was going to put it in my car, but while surfing the internet for some other info I came across a message from someone saying not to use K&Ns with SS air induction. I don't remember what the date was on that message, but he said that people were using air filters made for jeeps because it was the closest fit, but that it still leaks. I checked the model number on the one I have and it was the same as the one mentioned not to use in that internet message.
My question: Is there a K&N made for a 97 SS that is safe to use now? I'd like to do something easy like that to get a little more air flow.
Thanks.

Basic problem is crappy air box. K&N filters that fit, e.g. Jeep, are horizontal rather than vertical like stockers or LS1, so possible for filter to accordian under high pressure.
If you use some 3-M narrow, double stick tape to hold it down better, you shouldn't have any problems most of the time under normal circumstances.
You can also fabricate something to keep the K &N from pushing off the seat (accordianing). Perhaps something out of wire.
If K&N wanted to, they would at least provide a vertical style that would fit, K&N abandoned any idea to provide the 96/97SS with a filter when they couldn't get it to seal well using grease, etc. I.e, there wasn't enough $$ in it for them to go the extra mile.JMHO

I'm buying one of the new Blue Holley versions (used) of the K&N type filter from a guy here online that used one in his SS and he said it fit great. I would check into one of those instead of risking your new SS.
Yah. Check it out. Not sure they make one to fit the 96/97s though.
I've had the jeep filter on my 97SS since new. Only have 7800 miles on the car, but can't say I've had any problems using the filter.
Running around 400+ to the crank and doesn't miss a beat.
If I believed that they make one for the 96/97, I buy one in a heartbeat.JMHO

this is the link to the Holley site showing the part number list as part number 221-5.

Let us know what the filter is like. I.e, is it vertical or horizontal? Can it be pushed off the box (can it be collapsed)?
If it is vertical and fits just like the stock filter, then I will try one myself.
If it is just a copy of the K&N Jeep filter, then I wouldn't bother.
K&N even recommended NOT using any of their filters for the 96/97SS, but if they don't care about the competition providing a workable filter then that's obviously their choice.

Hey guys,
Im not sure if JETMAN95Z28 has tried that Holley air filter yet, but I have a little more info on this.
I noticed that on that page he linked to it had the holley filter #221-5 and it has K&N P/N next to it of 33-2084.
Well, I couldn't find anyone that carried the holley in my area so I decided to look into the K&N it listed there. I compared 33-2084 to my stock paper filter and found it was the same height and width, but it wasn't as tall so good chance it would lift off the seat. It did have the pleates running the same direction as the stock filter though. So if those two filters from K&N and Holley are the same dimensions, then the holley won't work either. Its dissapointing that K&N won't make one for our cars.
Anyone know where or how the K&N 33-2018 leaks like people say? I was thinking of getting one of those and putting 3M double sided molding tape underneath around the seal to kill that problem.
Also, it just hit me that maybe I don't have the same airbox that came on the car from factory. I've put a K&N in my car just to see it and I can't see how it would lift off the seat. The cover its tight and there isn't any room for it to move. I need to find some pics of factory airboxes and see if it is like mine or not.

I have the Holley. It is the same size as my K & N jeep filter which is almost the same size as the stock filter. The K & N and the Holley both fit heigt width and length as the stock (or close enough).
There are basically (2) K & N filters that have the same width and length, but only one has the height too. The other one (dodge I think) isn't high enough.
Go with the Holley because it has the vertical pleats.JMHO

BUBBA, is the holley P/N 221-5? Did you just plop it in the stock airbox and forget about it or did you do anything special?
I just got done putting 3M Molding tape inside the airbox around the edge. I reoiled a k&n I got with the car and put it in. It fit tight. I took it out and really opened it up and got it hot then came home and checked the filter. I couldn't even get it off easily it was sealed so tight.
Also, I don't understand the importance of the pleates running short ways (vertical?) anyway. Is it for more support from the pressure of the air coming in? Those things have the wire and I just don't see that bending and stuff.
snorkelface, my filter is P/N 33-2018 and the pleates point to both side fenders when it is installed. It sounds like you have one that runs the other direction which I assume is vertical. What is the part number for that one and is it the same height as stock ones?

Yeah, my pleates definitely are in a different direction than yours. I got it about 51/2-6 years ago, so I'll see if I still have the box, and try to remember where I got it. I don't think the filter is as tall as the stock onoe though.
I can't say for certain that the horizontal filter will accordian off the box at high pressure or not. But since it is possible with little pressure to push the filter off the edge, I believe that the vertical orientation offers a stiffer option and that is why I have switched to the Holley.
