run dino oil on your new motor for the 1st 3k miles or so and change it a few times between then, then switch to mobil 1 syn, thats what i'd do anyway.

It would be easier for you to send the oil to the lab yourself, since sending it across the border can sometimes be tricky. Check out Blackstone Labs, they are very good. (do a Google search for their website address)

If you're doing 100 miles a day or more, you'll probably find that you can go way longer than 6k between changes, probably closer to 10k or more.

I've heard the same thing, with a new/rebuilt engine to use conventional oil, change it @3000 miles, use conventional oil for the the next change. On the 3rd or 4th oil change, then switch to synthetic.

A couple of mechanics told me the same thing, with new engines, conventional oils help "seal" the gaskets during the first 5000-10,000 miles, then switching to synthetic.

I don't know if this is true or not, the mechanics I've spoken to say that the conventional oils get somewhat gummy, which help seal the gaskets??? That is why most folks say not to change to synthetic oil on engines that have high mileage, they find/make openings in the gaskets...???

You are thinking of the rings. With synthetic it is possible that the rings will not seat properly on break in. That is why many builders suggest Dino on break in and synthetic after. The gaskets do not need anything to help them seal.

Rings will seat just fine using synthetics, otherwise there would be a lot of problems with all of the Corvettes built since 1992.

Contrary to popular belief, synthetic oil is not more slippery and does not hinder the break in process at all. I know people who have converted their new cars over to synthetic oil the same day they picked them up, and have no oil consumption issues.

The only reason to stick with dino oil in a new engine is so you can do a few frequent changes at first and not spend a lot of $$$ on oil you're going to just drain out quickly.

If you want to thin out your oil that is. I'd never recommend doing something like that at all.

Guess I'm gonna use mobil 1. You know I've heard guys using different weight oils and not going with the 10-30 just the plain 30. Any comments on that?
