Just traded my 3000 for a z28
Good deal right? Yes I think so. Anyway a few questions on the car, since I'm more of a motorcycle guy.
Hitting up to about 100 MPH it starting making a clunking sounds almost, and lurching a little, and wouldn't accelerate anymore, is that a rev limiter, a governor?
Also, the coolant is full, and the light is on... I saw around here replace the sensor, great I would do that..... where is the sensor? What I was reading it almost sounded like it was in the actual coolant reservoir.. didn't sound right to me.
And also the speedometer is 20-30 MPH to fast, is that an easy fix? I have an extra gear the guy gave me, he said the stock one is on it right now. I think when he mentioned what it was he said "something something 320"? So I'm not sure.
No mods on the car that I know of. The car is automatic. Yeah I know I sound like an idiot, I just want some answers. Thank you.

The level sensor is in the radiator, on the engine side, just below the radiator cap. Failure is pretty common. Try cleaning it and reinstalling it...50-50 it'll work fro a while.
The PCM control the speedometer using input from the vehicle speed sensor. You don't change gears in the tranny anymore. Sounds like the rear end ratio was changed.
There is a rev limiter on all cars and a top speed limiter on some cars. If the car didn't come with Z-rated tires you ended up with a 112mph limiter. The rev limiter kicks in below 6000 rpm but I don't remember the exact number...
Re: Just traded my 3000 for a z28
Yup, sorry 1997 z28 30th anniversary edition. lt1 based engine, automatic. And yeah, rear end ratio sounds more right.
So when the rev limiter is topped out what does the car do? is there anyway to remove the speed and rev limiter?

Re: Just traded my 3000 for a z28
Is the option sticker still on the driver's door? Look on the end of it(that's where it is on my '96).
The "320", I guess, would be is a reference to the 3.23 gears. I'm not sure if yours came with 2.73 or 3.23.....that option sticker will tell us what options came on the car(gear ratio, tires, etc.)
As was mentioned above, if the car didn't come with Z rated tires from the factory....it got a speed limiter related to the top speed of the tire ordered on the car(usually around 115-120). That can be bumped up with ECM programming. The speedometer problem can be fixed as well, with programming, once the gear in the rear end is known.
You don't need to change the engine rev limit unless you've got the valve train to support it(roller rockers, valve springs). Otherwise, you'll get valve float, the piston could kiss a valve and cause all kinds of problems.

Re: Just traded my 3000 for a z28
The stock rev limiter is a bit over 5,800 RPM. The stock tach typically reads about 200 RPM higher than actual RPM. Most magazines that tested the top speed of the LT1 cars got results in the 155 MPH range.
Re: Just traded my 3000 for a z28
i want to remove mine or atleast bump it up alittle, anyone got any sites i can go to or any you recamend so i can buy the stuff to do this????
sorry didnt meant to steal the thread....
Re: Just traded my 3000 for a z28
trifecta performance (trifectaperformance.com I think)
Madz28 (does he still do this?) (madtuner.com)
Gonna run you a couple hundred dollars give or take a bit.
Changing the stock speed limiter is easy job so anyone can do it fine more or less.
Keep in mind it's not the Rev limiter that holds you back, it's the Speed Limiter.
Also, OP your car is not stock if that speedo is 30mph off, make sure you have 3.23:1 gears before you get the speedo fixed. There is not a gear in the tranny you need to change it's all in the computer (you need the above links can fix the speedo for you. Temp sensor could possibly be bad, mine does the same.
