Thumbs up Just started the Z for the first time after the CAM SWAP!

Sounds amazing, started up good.

1st start - it stalled after about 3 seconds

let it sit,

2nd start - fired right up, idled great, held it at 2000 rpm's for a few minutes.

3rd start - same as 2nd.

What else should I do before I change the oil to my good usual stuff? How long should I hold it at ~2K rpm? I hear there is no break in required?

I am so happy right now! No leaks that I could see, no codes, just a low coolant light

btw, it's a 93 LT1 A4 with the XE 227/233 cam!

Congrats. In re the low coolant lite, make sure they plugged the sensor back in. If plugged in, the sensor may be bad. Replace it and no more lite. JMHO

I'll take a look at it. I'm sure I plugged it back in. Why would it all of a sudden go bad? I'm thinking maybe I didn't put enough coolant in it... I added about 1 and 1/4 gallons...

Cam break in is not required on roller lobes, that's only for the old-school flat tappet kind that had the wear material on the lobes to break the lifters in.

I say drive it around for a day then go ahead and change the oil...20 miles or so. It won't take long to flush any grime and lube out into the existing oil.

The coolant light is normal whenever you drain coolant. You will have to top it off 4 or 5 times to get the light to go out. Each time the car heats up and cools off some air will find its way to the top of the radiator. Be patient, it will take 4 or 5 attempts over a period of a week to get all the air our and make the light stop coming on.

Congrats!!!

One time a mechanic failed to plug mine back in and I just noticed it by accident.

My lite comes on often and it goes out if I turn the ignition off and back on again.

The sensors quite often go bad, according to many on this board. Of course, you should make sure your coolant actually is up to the correct level.

There is a lot of advice to change or unplug the sensor on this board. I followed it once and changed the sensor. It was a waste of money.

Filling the radiator once and bleeding it will not get the job done. The trick is to keep topping it off. This has solved my problem 3 or 4 times after doing work on the car where I needed to drain the coolant. Persistence is the key! It costs you nothing to try and I think you will find the problem can be solved this way.

Good luck.

Thanks guys,

I'll be driving it around for awhile this weekend, I'll keep checking the coolant level after driving.

I did the whole thing myself, with a little help from a couple friends. It wasn't really hard, but a ton of work. I took it VERY slow and it took me 2 weeks total. But that included waiting time for a new opti, couple days wait to get a crank hub install tool located, and other small stuff. I didn't work on it every day.

I just put in the same cam as you. I am in the process of getting all the other parts installed in exhaust, gears, stall, headers. I did get the pcm tuned by madwolf and that seems to help. The car hates the stock stall and 2.73's. It can't get out of the hole for nothing. 3.42's and a 2800 stall will get the thing motivated. That cam starts to pull hard around 2600 r's doesn't it. What do you think about the sound of the idle?
congrats on the install, and I also have the low coolant light. Need to keep on adding to get it to go off.

Congrats, I just started mine today as well. 224/236 cam in a 97 with a Vortech supercharger. As soon as I adjust the rockers and fix my oil feed hose (and wash the car, darn pine tree pollen) it will be ready to rock and roll.
