Just got a T/A
Just got a T/A
Ok, so I know this is a Z28 Camaro site. But there's not many active T/A message boards, and I figured these cars are pretty similar.
I have a couple questions if people don't mind helping me out.
It's a 93 TA with 50,000 Miles.
Only problem i've had is I hear a weird humming/buzzing noise near the back of the car. A mechanic said it was the fuel pump, I'm curious to see if this is true or he's just trying to make money. Has anyone had this problem before?
I want some suggestion for low budget mods, to make the car maybe a bit quicker, a bit stronger, and to sound REAL beefy. Good flowmasters? Headers? But keep in mind a low budget. What would you go with and what's a good price I should spend for it so I know i'm not getting ripped off.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Just got a T/A
The noise could very well be the pump. Some are very noisy. Don't mean anything if they are as some noise is normal.
As far as mods there are Soooooo many ya just need to do the research and find out what ya want. Some exhaust sites have recordings of their systems.

If you don't mind me asking, do you know how much I would be spending on a fuel pump. I'm just starting to get real into cars seeing as though i'm 18 and havn't had my license even a year yet.
Mods I can look into and i've done a bit of looking but do you have a good site with good prices and with the sound clips?
Also about the fuel pump, how do I know when it really needs to be repaired and when it's become a real problem. The noise can only be heard when the radio is completely off, when the radio is on it gets muffeled out and you can't hear it over the radio. So i'm not too concerned, but it's just a bit annoying hearing it, is there a way I can quiet it down?
Thanks again.
Re: Just got a T/A
Replacing it is the only way to get the noise to TONE DOWN.
Have the fuel pressure checked and if it is good ya don't have to replace unless ya want to.
Pump itself is $100 the labor is about $200. If ya are good with a wrench ya could do it yourself and save a bunch.
Hooker,Hedman,Kooks,Megaflow,Dynamax are a few sites. Google can give ya more.
I have NEVER found the prices for Hot Rod parts to be GOOD. Just the price ya pay to be a rodder.
Welcome to the site BTW.

Re: Just got a T/A
Thanks a lot.
I'm going to get the fuel pressure checked tomorrow and see what they say. I'm still pretty happy about the car, 50,000 original miles and driven by an old guy was the reason I got it. But there's absolutely no mods or nothing done so I def want to go check out some easy mods to give it a bit more power and sound.
So if I was to replace the fuel pump myself, is it pretty self explanitory. I'm new to car mechanics, but i've always been handy with around the house stuff and electronics, and that type of thing. Is it a pretty low risk repair that I can do and if I mess up there's not a risk of totaly ruining the car?

It is NOT a low risk thing. Anytime ya fool with a fuel tank the risk factor goes through the roof. A little gas spill on the ground a little spark from dropping a wrench on the concrete--- Well ya get the picture.
If ya haven't done much mechanic work on cars IMO I would have somebody else do it IF it needs to be done. If this is your first fuel injection car ya will get used to the pump noise as I had to after turning wrenches for 40 yrs. They will make a noise, period.

So as long as I get it tested and they say it's ok then I'm fine? How long do they usually last while the noise is going like that. When the gas tank is full I dont' hear the noise (atleast I dont' remember hearing it).

Sweeeeeet ride.
Glad to help.
Re: Just got a T/A
Its a very nice ride. Paint looks mint.
If you are on a very strict budget, you can do a few things for exhaust.
If you want it to sound good, do this:
If you can afford it, get a Hooker Catback and take the cat out. Car will sound great, and you won't waste if you decide to add headers later, will just add to the new exhaust.
If you can't afford the catback, add a hooker muffler to your exhaust and take the cat out.
Taking the cat out will make the car sound wraspy/mean, and will help free up power.
I get compliments on my exhaust all the time. This is my second lt1. First one had a hooker catback and eddy shorty headers and no cat. This lt1 has hooker headers and hooker catback and of course no cat.
Car will be fun!
Is it manual or auto?

Is that the Hooker Catback that you're speaking about, or one of them? 300 isnt' too bad, if it'd sound real nice and beefy i'd do that.
Re: Just got a T/A
