MAF is the Mass Air Flow sensor. It is highly debatable to whether you can get any power from this mod. Some say to remove the screen and get a couple of ponies. But the primary function of the screen is to distribute an even amount of air across the sensors so they can send an accurate reading to the PCM( Computer ). Removing the screen may not be too good of an idea. Others say to get a granatelli or to port your existing one but i and others on the board will tell you that there is really not too much to be gained by doing this. Just my .02. I'm sure somebody will chime in and disagree with me but hey, i dont care.

Ah, its good to see somebody who used to be into imports, see the good points of the domestics as well, and be eager to learn.

The MAF is a mass airflow sensor. Keep your stock one, its fine until you start surpassing the 500hp or so mark. What you may be seeing in people's sigs is the MAF descreen. There is a screen mesh in front of your MAF that some people prefer to take out for "added flow". It doesn't do much though, and you might break something, so.. I suggest you leave it alone.

With $4k, I'd keep $1k around for repairs. These cars, esp. bought used, have a couple repairs to be made. Check the backof your intake manifold for oil leaks. Also, keep a close eye on the waterpump and optispark.

For mods, first thing of course is a cai and cat-back. Then get some headers, then you'll have a full exhaust and your car will breath much more. From here, you can decide whether you want to go with nitrous, or maybe a cam and some heads down the line.

There are tons of things to do -just browse around LT1 tech, see what people like, and learn as you go along!

Welcome to the LT1 family.

Congrats!!!! First thing you should get is a CAI, then a catback and/or headers. Both of these mods will let the car breathe easier as well as beef the sound of your ride. Then do easy free mods like TB bypass(6-8hp), 160 tstat, fan switch, all of these keep the car running way cooler so you won't lose hp. Also check your plugs, wires, oil, fuel filter, pcv valve cause if those are in bad shape they should be replaced before anything else. Good luck, and have fun.

If you want to beat him pretty quick, just throw in a gear 3.73 or 4.10's, Nitto or BFG Drag Radials and a cold air intake. I would imagine that it would get you well into the high 13's with those mods. Then if you can help it breathe a little with LT's(they pass in houston), and a catback or cut out I would say you'd drop a couple of .10's. Then if you really want some good gains get a cam kit...hot cam I know will pass and have seen 224/230's pass as well and you can get those from combination motorsports or can get the hotcam kit from Jason Cromer for around ~$500...with all of that it would get you low 13's to high 12's or if you're a good driver in the mid 12's. Then I would get the heads ported and add a 52mm TB...then you'd be in the low 12's/high 11's. And if you want some extra insurance get a 100 shot of the gas I would really reccommed saving some money for mishaps..the ol' opti or water pump love to go on you. Glad to see you're in the club now. I've been trying to get my brother to get a camaro, but he is stuck in the Fix Or Repair Daily mode...he's on his 5th. Good luck with everything.

You dont know how true that is. You can find out anything and everything about your car here. These guys know everything!! And once you have owned the car for a while and spent some time on the board then you will get to where you know more too. Everything i learned about my car i learned right here. So dont hesitate to ask any questions.
