Just bought z28. Problems

I just bought a 1994 z28 auto from the original owner. All stock older ladys car.

When I try to Accel it putters, revs up but doesn't go anywhere. Almost sounds like it's misfiring. Also, while I'n park. I would slightly rev and the oil gauge spikes up the. Down to 1/4 as the rpm decrease. Also does this at a stop light. Any ideas what this could be?

I just bought it last night and made a two hour drive home. I will be changing plugs, oil,oil filter. fuel filter tomorrow after work.

Re: Just bought z28. Problems

I have read the opti FAQ before I posted. Honestly,
The FAQ is all Greek to me. I don't have a ohm meter anymore and if I had one, I'm unsure How to check steps listed.

Could be a number of things. Bad wire, plug, opti, coil, injectors could be gumming up also. Get it scanned with a good tool and see why its missing. Had the same problem and mine wad injectors.

There is no service/check engine light on. There is also a red water drop that comes on. It has new radiator, hoses, and coolant level and temps are fine. I live I'n s small town, who would have a OBD1 scanner? Would it pull a code without a CEL on the dash?

I will also try FI cleaner.

Has the car sat for long? We used a snap on scanner on mine which is 93. My check engine light would come on but would shut back off randomly. So many things it could be so I would start with the wires. I had too have a fuel injection clean forced through my injectors twice too get it running right could the gas have moisture In it?

Re: Just bought z28. Problems

It was a daily driver. It sat for about a week or two. The lady bought a 2011 2ss and thats why the car sat for a few weeks. She told me started it up every other day.

There is not a check engine light on. Just now, I started it up went to lunch it did not sputter or show any problem and turned it off when I parked When I started it back up
To pull onto the road it started sputtering again.

As already recommended, check the ignition components for arcing, the plugs for burned electrodes or carbon deposits. Check the fuel pressure to insure the pump is providing adequate flow. Check the rubber inlet elbow that connects the MAF sensor to the throttle body. Make sure there are no tears in it, and that it is not off the throttle body at the bottom. Scan it for codes. Not all codes turn on the SES light.

It's normal for the oil pressure to vary with RPM - low RPM = low pressure, high RPM = high pressure. At idle, I like to see at least 20psi, but GM doesn't turn the "check gauges" light on until it drops to 6psi. As RPM increases, the rule-of-thumb is 10 psi per 1,000 RPM, so 20 psi at 2,000 RPM, 40 psi at 4,000 RPM would be normal.

^^^

I will check ign system tomorrow. I changed the oil, oil filter, air filter, and fuel pump. Also cleaned the MAF today.

Took it out for a short drive. Zero hesitation and didn't very I'n rpm while at a stop.

Like I stated before, it will start to very I'n rpm after I restate the car ( I haven't had time to restart car and take it back out to see if problem is resolved.

I did notice the elbow to Tb was torn on the bottom.

I will order a aftermarket smooth elbow next Friday.

Thanks for all the input. I do try to run searches before I make a post.

I have much to learn and I will make a intro thread I'n the noon section with pictures, etc.

Re: Just bought z28. Problems

UPDATE: I have changed the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, cleaned the MAF,fuel filter, air filter and added gumout. I took the car out and the rough idle and puttering went away. It did putter/hesitate once when I hit 80-90% throttle.

There is a rip on the underside on the elbow that connects the the TB I have rigged something up until I can buy a new elbow.

So far I have been told to check/replace:
-Optispark
- air inlet line
-clean TB (unsure how to do so)
- coil wires

I will replace the wires, belt, elbow next weekend

Also, there were two plugs that were gummed up and wet looking. I don't remember which plugs they were. After reading many how tos to change plugs, it was not a hard task. I got the driver side all from under the car. And the passenger side from the top, all I removed was the alternator.

Any other ideas on what I should check. Or is there anyone local that has more knowledge to meet up and check my car out? I would pay for your gas money, buy you a beer, etc I'n return for the help.

Unsure on fuel pressure.

I do have a loud howl or screech upon start up and when I park. I have no Ac (doesn't blow cold) it sounds like it's coming from the Ac condenser. How would I fix that issue?

Do you think maybe its a problem with the AC compressor clutch and the belt is squealing?
