I got various parts from various sources. Stuff like Felpro gaskets, oil, coolant, thread lock, thread seal, etc, I got at Autozone. Specific GM stuff I got from Jason Cromer (a search on that name in this forum will get you his phone #). Performance parts I got from Thunder Racing, but there are numerous sources for this - check the vendor index on this site for a great list of shops. I also got a few things from Jegs and Summit. Lastly, bandaids and beer from the local supermarket

Why all these places? Well, it just sort of worked out that way for me

As for your timing set, a fresh stock replacement will be fine, but obviously something more stout is always better. Basically, don't fret over the timing set if your budget is getting tight.

 

Okay I found a guy selling Proform 1.6 RR for 100 dollars shipped. Do I need/want these for my setup? I know I need roller rockers for my cam, but my friend said I might need 1.7s. But I thought I needed 1.6s. Can someone clarify? Also will these work for my cam?

I'd contact one of the shops like Thunder, Combo, etc on the phone and let them know what you're doing. They'll put a package together for your application. The right springs, appropriate rockers, push rods, the whole 9.

As for 'needing' 1.7's, that's a definite no.

 

I figure I'd just piece it together myself. You can get parts for usually half the price via ebay and the Parts for Sale forum.

As far as pushrods, springs, and retainers I'm probably going to deal with a reputable website. I guess I should also get guide plates for the push rods?

If you get non-self aligning rockers, then yeah, you'll need guide plates and hardened (at a minimum) push rods.

If you know what parts works together well, by all means piece it together yourself and save some $. Personally, I got input by professionals for my set up. It was cheaper for me to spend the money the right way once than experimenting by what I see in message boards, etc. HINT

 

Well I am getting self aligning rockers, so I guess I'll just get hardened pushrods and 86 the non-self aligning rockers.

yes, you can, but you will be basically gutting the front of the engine bay...as expected. once all that crap is outof the way and radiator/shroud/fans & crap gone, 2 grown men can stand between the block & the supports & crap...you'll be fine
