Just bought a '93 Z28 - Need help with this POS

Despite the topic, I'm not THAT discouraged. However I am a little worried and not sure if I got a good deal on it or not, considering what may be wrong with it and the fact that it needs paint. It's a '93 Z28 with the M6 and 118k on the clock. It has a hard top and cloth interior. Overall the car is about a 7 cosmetically in and out. I paid $3200 for it. I'm not too worried about the cosmetics right now as much as the mechanics of the thing. It has a _real_ bad hesitation in first gear to the point that the car lurks back and forth and shakes. It doesn't feel like it's losing power and it seems fine in the other gears, it's just in first, maybe 3k and under. What could this be?

Also, I was gettin on it really hard off the line and the shift stick moved up and down a couple inches, maybe even a few. This really freaked me out, what could this be?

First - do a tuneup - plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, etc.
It could be your opti too. Either way, it sounds ignition related.

2nd, replace your tranny mount.

If it's only a first gear thing I wouldn't be so quick to call it an ignition issue. Is it at certain RPM's in first, or is it all the way through first that you're having the problems.

I know it has new plugs and wires, the guys were changing em when I looked at it today. I'll get right to work on the air and fuel filters, tomorrow. If it was the opti what would the symptoms be?

How much is a new tranny mount?

The only time I really notice it is at low RPM's in first gear, but I think it's any gear at low RPM's, like less than 2k. Above 3k in first is fine. I cruised for 15 miles today at 60mph in 6th around 1500-1700 rpm's and it was fine. Then I tried to give it a bit of throttle and it lagged really bad.

That's pretty interesting to hear from a man with an opti for an avatar.

Notice, I said it sounded like an ignition issue, and I'm still 95% sure it's the opti.

Tranny mounts are anywhere from $15 (normal autozone) to $25ish (for a polyurethane one).

I would check the rear transmission mount. That would explain the shifter movement and could do other wierd things.

It is under the tail shaft of the transmission. I would get the car on stands of a lift and try pushing the transmission up, if you get alot of movement that is the problem. You may also be able to move the tranmission side to side or see a split in the mount.

It might not be the only problem but it should be ruled out or fixed.

Low rpm stumble/hesitation sounds like it could be a bad EGR valve ($40). I would also point a finger at the opti too as Ion has said.

I'll throw it on jack stands tomorrow and check on the tranny mount. If it was the opti or an EGR wouldn't they throw codes and make the check engine light come on?

Note: Now that he mentioned it's an all gear low RPM issue, I retract the previous statement.

It just would seem odd for there the be an ignition issue ONLY in first gear, and I like my avatar thank you very much.

Re: Just bought a '93 Z28 - Need help with this POS

Another question I had is I noticed the oil pressure gage fluctuates with the RPM's, that's not normal is it?

Today I went 47 miles on half a tank of gas, do these cars really get THAT bad of gas mileage or is there something causing that? I admit, I did get on it quite a bit.

Re: Just bought a '93 Z28 - Need help with this POS

I recently replaced the plugs on my car becausae it was doing the same thing. Plugs fixed it. I'm using a Delteq system, so I knew it wasn't the Opti.

The fuel gauges on our cars are wildly optimistic. My car goes like 200 miles (in town) on a tank and it will read 3/4 tank when there is actually about a 1/2 tank. In town my car will go from an indicated 1/2 tank to empty in a little over 50 miles.

Anyone else have any idea what the hesitation problem could be? the plugs and wires were changed yesterday...

take it to autozone and have it scanned for free.

However, I gotta agree with everyone else and say probably the opti.

It's normal for the oil pressure to rise proportional to RPMs.
