Jegs Starter

I am thinking getting this jegs starter in this link. Its the 1st one on the page. Its on sale right now. My question is I have a Spec Aluminum Flywheel 6spd manual. How many teeth does my flywheel have so I can get the right starter.

153 if it's an LT1 and it has the stock starter on it now.

Let's see 1-2-3-4 roll it over 5-6----------------

Re: Jegs Starter

Well see Im currently in the process of building a motor. So I haven't used this flywheel yet. And I my old starter was going out on me and with this high compression motor I figured Id put a good starter on it before I put it back in the car. The details on that starter say 153-163 does that mean it will work with a flywheel with 153 through 168 or 153 or 168?

Re: Jegs Starter

That's what it says and with the shims and different clocking pattern it may do both. Never tried one on both flywheels.
Might want to call them and make sure.

Hmm... So the spec aluminum flywheel I have is a 153 tooth? So what should I ask them, what tooth that starter works with? If you click back on that link and click on more details for that starter it says it works for all chevy sb except LS series...

Re: Jegs Starter

Get another stock or an LT4, I had a CVR which is similar to that Jegs and it crapped in a little over a year. They arent really meant to last that long in some thing that gets driven regularly. Mine wouldnt start after it got hot, replaced with a new stock LT1 and havent had problems since.

Re: Jegs Starter

that starter works with both, if you look closely, you will see 4 mounting holes, which is two diffetent 2 bolt mounts

Re: Jegs Starter

How does the position of the bolt holes make it work with either flywheel just moves it out farther for larger flywheel?

The clocking holes let ya put the solenoids in the right location for clearance. The through holes let it mount in two positions.

Re: Jegs Starter

How do you test to see if you need those shims it comes with or not?

it should come with instructions on how to check the clearance, involves a small drill bit or round stock, its been a while since I did one

Re: Jegs Starter

I don't think I needed any shims when I installed mine. You'll have to rotate it to fit with the allen screws, but other than that it has been great.

Re: Jegs Starter

I've been running the CVR starter, which is the one JEG's now sells under its own name. 5 years and still going strong. Being able to rotate it keeps it away from the headers, which will extend the life. I did have to grind the face of the mounting block slightly on one corner, to clear the lip on the stock oil pan.
