This may sound stupid but where is te best place to put the jack stands for my 95 m6 camaro. I know of the little pads behind the wheels but it seems to make a cracking noise every time I lower the car onto the stands?

 

That cracking noise is those pads cracking. Put the jackstands under the subframes. Very solid and those won't crack.

 

If you feel you want to use the plastic pads, put a steel plate between the top of the jackstand and the pad, so the top of the stand doesn't smash into the plastic pad.
