intake gasket or rear main?

Are there any tell tale signs of having the notorious intake gasket leak. Ever since I have switched over to synthetic oil, I have noticed a small drip or two beneath my car. I crawled underneath it and it kind of looks like a rear main problem, I can see some oily gunk built up there. Taking a look at the back of the intake isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world, (since half of the motor in under the dash), so I was just wondering if there are any signs that go with it..like low oil pressure or unusual oil consumption. The funny thing is, i have 1,800 miles on this last oil change and she is still right at the full mark. Let me know your opinions and such.

thanks,
trav

yeah, i'm a dumbass..if i just would have read a few posts down the line i would have gotten my answers. I am going to go take a paper towel to the intake right now. I do have one question though..is there any oil pressure loss with an intake leak?

thanks,

just to let you know, i went all along the back of the intake with a paper towel and i didnt come across a single drop of oil. How common is it for the rear main to go out on these cars? I know the chev 350's have had huge problems with this for years. What all is involved to replace the seal, it doesnt look like it would be a picnic.

Yes, i do realize i have been basically talking to myself on these last few posts.

Thanks for any info

In my case, the rear main and the intake was leaking. To replace the rear main, you need to drop the trans and remove the flywheel or flexplate. If you have an M6 now would be a good time to install a new clutch, especially since oil has probably soaked your existing one and shortened its life.

My rear main on my black T/A has gone out, and the rear main on my Purple Pearl T/A is leaking too. Not too uncommon.

Do you think I should be really worried about that rear main and tear every thing apart right now, or can I put it off until winter where I can take my time on it.

I thoguht I had a leak too but it ended up beaing oil leaking from my fill tube.I guss the gasket is bad. I replace the rear at the beging of the year when i had the trans out.

Also think about how little a few drops are pore a drop of oil on the ground and look at it compared to your leak. you will see it would take very long to show it being low on the dip stick so If you not worried about spoting up a your driveway dont worroy about it.

I work at checker auto parts so I can get oil and a filter pretty cheap. I have decided to go back to maxlife 10w30. I talked to the previous owner and he said it never leaked a drop on that stuff. I figure..what the hell, I'll try it and see what happens. It just started to leak when I switched to synthetic, so maybe the maxlife will do the trick.

I have been told that if you run synthetic you will always have leaks. That you can run dino oil and you won't leak at all but when you switch over the leaks begin.
