Injector Question
Injector Question
Hi all,
I'm a new member here, as I just put my '79Z in storage and picked up a '95Z M6... and I'm new to the whole FI thing. I was poking around under the hood yesterday and saw that the connectors for the 5 and 7 injectors were swapped. Here's the thing though, car ran fine before, and seems to run about the same now. WHY?
thanks
Dave

Won't generally hurt. If you think about it, many cars, including the 1993 LT1 use "batch fire" injection, which pulses each bank of injectors simultaneously, once on each crank revolutuon, so injector pulses are not tied to valve events. The fuel hits the back of the closed intake valve, vaporizes from the heat, and sits there waiting for the valve to open and air to pull it into the cylinder.
Sequential injection, with injector pulse timed to the opening valve will generally offer cleaner emissions at part load... the thing the factory has to design for. But once you go WOT, the injector pulse widths actually extend to the point where they are firing long before the valve actually opens.
I've run a sequential injection LT1 with the injectors 180deg out of phase, and the only noticable difference was that there might be a slight stumble coming off idle, and only when the valves were so cold that the fuel was puddling. Once the engine had any heat in it, you could not tell the difference between correct and incorrect injector timing.
