Ignition problem

So I'm thinking that I have an ignition problem and was following shoebox's guide on determining if the opti was good shown here. I was measuring A and D on the left side of the harness in

this picture and got 5 volts for A and 0 for D. So I went to Orileys and had my ICm tested and it came out good. Any ideas. I don't want to change out my opti if I don't have too. Also all fuses and relays are good. Thanks!

Re: Ignition problem

What are the symptoms you're experiencing that lead you to believe that it's an ignition problem?

Re: Ignition problem

I was getting ready to do a burn out at the track and reved the engine to about 4k and it back fired several times and went dead before ever letting out on the clutch.

Now when you try to turn it over it just acts like one cylinder per second or so is firing untill it finally dies out. It never gets above maybe 200 RPMs vefore it dies and only lasts 5 seconds or so. Hope that made sense.

Thanks for helping me.

Re: Ignition problem

Could be the opti if you measured the voltage correctly.

Once the motor fires up are all the header primaries warm?

Re: Ignition problem

Do you hear the fuel pump priming right before you attempt to start her up? Also, I would hook up a mechanical fuel pressure gauge and check for PSI with fuel pump priming but car off. And, if you can get the car to start, have a friend keep a lookout on the fuel's PSI. At best you would know if it's your pump or not and at worst you would be able to rule the fuel pump out if you had proper PSI, etc.

Re: Ignition problem

I was kind of leaning toward the opti. I do hear my fuel pump prime, and it is only 1 year old. Haven't checked to see if the headder primarys are warm

Re: Ignition problem

Lets see. Faulty injectors, clogged cat (unlikely), ignition coil, plug wires, spark plugs, clogged fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, fuel leak (hope not!), dead battery. Though this all sounds like ignition-related, almost anything can cause this situation. The best bet would be to one-by-one rule out each possible component until the one that's causing this is found.

Get a fuel PSI gauge from AutoZone and check that out to rule out a fuel leak, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, etc. This is probably the easiest thing you can do at first. Then I would look at injectors and the fuel rail, and then at ignition starting with spark plugs and working your way back to the opti.

And if possible, get a good scan tool like LT1 Edit or something similar to rear your PCM.

Re: Ignition problem

Thanks, don't have a cat, ignition coil is 2 years old, plugs and wires are 2 years old, fuel filter was changed 1.5 years ago, battery is 3 months old.

fuel pressure regulator is the only thing in your list that I haven't checked.

Edit: The opti is original with 178,000 miles.

Re: Ignition problem

If it is the regulator don't get a stock replacement, get an adjustable one ~$60-100 depending on brand.

Edit: or if it's the opti (probably) then I would highly recommend a DIS like Delteq or LTCC.

I would lean toward that as well. Since you have so many miles on the opti, I would just replace the whole thing.
