ignition gains

How involved is a MSD 6a to install to a 94 z w/ auto tranny? Got one in the shop along with new plugs and plug wires and want it installed. How much difference will theses mods be worth as far as rwhp and mpg and hrottle response?

Re: ignition gains

My MSD was my first mod... things you notice are a smoother idle....

don't know about the rest...didn't tell much other than the car was quieter... and went from a 1,100 idle to a 800rpm idle...

anyhow it's an ok install as long as your good with electrical work...

Re: ignition gains

Does the MSD 6a work with the opti, coil, etc? Or do you need to replace something else too?

Re: ignition gains

this is what i got when i posted about the same question

http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=320403

they basically told me that it was a waste of money unless it had a power adder, that the stockers did a fine job...

Re: ignition gains

I noticed no difference with or without it when the rest of the ignition is in good shape. I took it out of the loop for a few days, put it back in, back and forth, and discovered it was pretty much a waste of $. The $ can be better spent on fresh plugs & wires.

Re: ignition gains

I always find it interesting when muscle car guys call some performance parts unecessary....talk about contradiction....

There's allot you can do with an MSD box other than just slapping it on to smooth our your idle... it's a useful tool in protecting your engine with a REV limiter, shift light, nitrous, adjusting timing, ETC.. it can offer you allot of things... there's really no reason not to have one.... it won't hurt.

Stick ignition is crap.... "more power!!!" (Tim allen voice)....

By this logic, any and all performance parts are necessary?

Yes, there is a lot you can do with the right ignition box. The originator mentioned the 6a in an N/A application.

Re: ignition gains

It may run better in a variety of ways if you install an MSD, new wires and plugs. But the advantage will come from the wires and plugs, not the MSD. The stock ignition is fine in a stock or near stock car.
