Unless you are spraying or boosted either is a waste of money, the 96-7 cars in particular got a pretty healthy ignition and about all you will accomplish is accelerated opti and plug wear. Spend you money elsewhere.

Crane electronics are far better quality than MSD.

Yep, that's the point I was going to make. Unless you need a stronger spark (as in a boosted motor) or special features (multiple rev limiters, two-steps, etc.) you are wasting your money. The improvements people see when using these on stockish motors are either imaginary or related to the fact that when installing them most people do plugs and wires at the same time. The gain is due to new plugs and wires.

Re: which ignition do you prefer?

I'd like to know what others are using for ignition boxes. Seems the MSD 6AL boxes are pretty reliable but I previously used a Crane Hi-6 since its microprocessor controlled and I thought it would provide more accuracy than an MSD. It also came with an auto-sequence rev limiter. But, of course, MSD now makes a digital box, too.

Re: which ignition do you prefer?

the reason i'm going to upgrade my ignition setup is because i'm going to install nitrous in at the same time. will the msd window switch work w/ the crane ignition? thanks

Re: which ignition do you prefer?

I bought my MSD 6AL mostly for the rev limiter, but I'm also going to be spraying a good bit.

A lot of the b-body guys seem to like the Mallory box for nitrous, can do the window switch, retard, rev limit without any plugins.

I've never had a problem with any of the MSD 6 series that I've run.

Re: which ignition do you prefer?

I think the MSD Ditgital 6 is very nice. 2-step, timing retard, rev limit, Pus it looks great. Now before i hear you cant make it fit, i did a lil modification, but i can shut the hood and adjust everything with ease.

Now over look the mess this is the only pic i have, and it was when i was painting the engine compartment. We took a cuttin wheel, and cut the sides and a line up the top and hammered in the wheel well untill it sit flat, then welded some extra metal in to fill the gaps, smoothed a lil bondo, then spray bombed it. Now that we are painting the car we are redoing it all.

I went with a mallory 685 for the all in one feature and the price was comparable. You dont have to mount it in the engine bay. I mounted mine in the pass side glove box. Great spot to hide it and it's easy to adjust from inside the car, as well as having the grommit in the area to run the wires in.

i fried mine the first night i drove it, i was thinking it was because i did the glovebox like you.

did you hardwire it or use a harness?
