if the chip in my key is bad what will happen?

The "chip" is simply a resistor. You can check it as shown by Shoebox:

its usually the cylinder that goes bad not the key. it will run you about a 100 in parts from the dealer.
the wires that carry the signal from the "chip" are attached to the cylinder and will fray over time. when the signal no loner reaches the vats module it can just crank or do nothing. also the security light will come on.
