ICM problems?

New member to this forum so hello all. Anyways I have a 97 LT1 I bought about 2 months ago. First day I had it the low coolant sensor decided to fall out of the radiator and I lost all coolant, therefore it overheated. Ever since then I had a ICM related code (cant remember what it was exactly it had something to do with ICM low resolution or low voltage, maybe a p1374 idk). But today I replaced the ICM along with the coil. The original code disappeared but now I have a p1361. No problems when driving whatsoever. A tad bit of trouble starting but once it gets started it idles and runs great. Any ideas?

Also, ICM was not Delco. Bought it cheap online for like 30 bucks.

Edit: After rummaging through shoebox I remembered my original code was a P1371.

Re: ICM problems?

The only P137x code is P1371, distributor ignition low resolution signal. That is for the optical cam position sensor in the Optispark distributor. If the engine is running, it’s a stored code. If it was an active code the PCM would shut down the fuel system. It can set on startup if the PCM has a hard time acquiring the low res signal. Odd that replacing the ICM and coil solved that problem.

If you clear P1361, ignition control (IC) circuit low voltage, how fast does it come back? This could be intermittent, possibly caused by a poor ground connection for the ICM. Try Shoebox's test, particularly pin C. Maybe corroded or damaged ICM connector, or corroded, loose ground.

There's a link to the ignition system wiring diagram

You can also check the code troubleshooting info in a free download of the 1996 factory service manual (virtually identical to 1997):

Re: ICM problems?

If it is running and I clear it the SES light comes back immediately. And I believe the p1371 was just stored even after it was cleared. Is the ground for the ICM the 3 wires attached to one of the studs that hold on the ICM bracket?

Last post is confusing. To be clear..... you no longer have P1371, It disappeared after you changed the coil and ICM???

But you still have P1361, which is there when the SES light immediately turns on????

Look at Shoebox's guide. There is a wiring diagram link in there.

The ICM ground is a black wire from pin C on the ICM connector to the stud (ground # G111) that holds the ICM bracket to the head, along with two other wires. Do the complete Shoebox test to make sure there isn't an intermittent problem with the 12 volt supply to the ICM (pink wire, pin A on the ICM connector).

Re: ICM problems?

Sorry for the confusion. Yes you are correct the P1371 is gone now but it is now only showing a stored p1361. The P1371 went away after replacing the ICM and the coil. And yes the p1361 comes back immediately after I clear it. Also, I will try and get around to testing the ground sometime soon.
