IAT sensor problem?

im not real good with wiring so i thought i'd ask b4 i start cutting any wires.

i got a code P1113 i think it was, couldnt find it anywhere in my code book someone else checked theirs too, which was odd. anyway guy told me it had something to do with the voltage going to the IAT.

so i probe both sides of the little wiring harness, the one side was 5.3 volts i think (which was what the guy who helped me said it should be around there) and the other side is 12 volts but its supposed to be a ground?

sooo what should i do? one person said splice the ground wire and run it to the frame of the car since the current ground isnt good, someone else said dont do that just buy a whole new sensor (which i dont think will fix the problem if the ground is bad somewhere down the wire)

damn electronic crap. i should just trash the PCM and all its little sensor buddies and switch to carb

Donot cut wires! Bad things happen when you do! If i am not mistaken one side of the IAT is 12 v and the other side is a different amount based on the temp. So your readings are correct. Let me see if i can fin a code reference for you.

oh ok. yeah one side (not sure which one) should be steady X amount of voltage and the other side obviously varies in voltage depending on the temperature so the PCM knows whats up.

good thing i didnt just start cutting stuff

Re: IAT sensor problem?

You should be looking for ground on the black wire of the IAT harness. Use your meter set to OHMs. One lead to the black wire and one lead on a good ground. You should get close to zero ohms. Or just put your meter leads across the harness wires. You should read 5v or so.

There are codes P1111 and P1112 for the IAT-no P1113. Since you say you are not good with electical stuff, I would not do anything unless you are sure of what you are doing. It very well could be the sensor. The IAT will test just like the temperature sensors (see footnote on link page).

With the key on, you should have a steady 5 volts out of one wire.

P1113
IAT Sensor Open/Short

My scanner came up with some wierd description of "Manufacturer control air/fuel metering", couldnt find the code in my book, someone else couldnt find it in there book, but this other mechanic guy checked it and said thats what it was. maybe a manufacturer specific code???

i'd replace the sensor just since that seems the simplest solution but is there a possibility something else is causing it? im rather TIGHT on money after some *ahem* purchases and i dont want to spend a dime i dont have to

Perhaps a generic code, but it is not listed in the GM factory service manual for the f-body. You could try the resistor trick, just for testing purposes.
