A.I.R on my Hookers

i just bought some used Hooker Super Comp. Shorties with A.I.R, when i got them, i noticed they have the A.I.R hookups welded shut. is there any way that i can disable the A.I.R pump and take it all out? if so, will it give me any problems like codes or anything, it is a 93..if i can do this, can someone walk me through what i need to do..thanks

Yes, if you don't have the factory cat, you can remove the AIR.

what does the factory cat have to do with the air pump? does it have a sensor or something?

Re: A.I.R on my Hookers

The AIR pump sends air to the cat heating it up to operating temps sooner to make it more efficient.

i got a catgo and it has a plug for the tube coming out of the CAT. if i take all of the A.I.R out, will i have to block the EGR too? will this cause my car to send codes since it is an ECU instead of PCM?

Just unplug the electrical connector from the AIR pump and thats it. No code, nothing. I ran mine that way for years. When you go to emissions, just make sure the car is nice and warm and just position the AIR fittings right over the fittings on the headers so it looks like they are connected.

Re: A.I.R on my Hookers

If your cat has a tube for AIR, its not the correct cat. They stopped using the AIR connection on the side of the cat with the 1992 F-Bodies. 93 and up use a single bed catalyst that does not require intermediate air injection. As was posted above, the AIR pump only runs for a couple minutes at startup to help burn the excess fuel from the rich start mixture, and uses the heat from burning the fuel to heat up the cat so it works faster. The only connections from the AIR pump are to the stock exhaust manifolds. If your headers have the AIR connections welded up, you really don't have much choice but to delete the AIR system.

AIR and EGR are two different things. There's nothing that says that you have to delete the eGR if you delete the AIR.

Deleting the AIR pump will not set a code, as long as you have a good fuse in the power supply circuit. Deleting the EGR might set a code, but the OBD-I diagnostics are not very sensitive, and may not pick up the missing EGR flow.

Re: A.I.R on my Hookers

AIR is on the driver side header, EGR is on the passenger side. Are they both welded shut or just AIR?
If its just air you could do like Injuneer said. If its both you will have to delete EGR. You can get a block off plate to install on the back of the intake manifold to replace the EGR.
