I need some serious help.....car is acting up and a ses light is on help please!!
Go
Ok, tonight i take my car out and it feels just perfectly fine....then about 2 miles away from home i start to feel the car surging and acting very rough. I stopped at a redlight and it is idling crazy rough...so i pull into an empty lot and get out and check some things. There wasn't really anything obvious that i found that was wrong so i just sat there for awhile and kept starting it back up and running the revs up. Then for awhile i couldn't get it started and when it did start it barely caught on and slowly the rpm's upped to about 900 and are bobbing up and down and the car kind sputters. Ok, so then i decide to limp it home and at low rpm's the car doesnt hardly want to move at all it just sputters but when i give it gas it almost feels normal but it may be down on power some. At first i wasn't getting an SES light, but then it ended up popping up......and now its on right when the car is started but after 10 secs of letting it idle the SES starts blinking. I havent had a chance to check the code because every place is closed, but tomorrow i will. One last thing...there is also a very wierd smell that i dont really know what it is. And BTW i have never had any problems with my car until tonight and the car has 56,000 miles on it. No fluid leaks visible anywhere either (at least none were leaking onto the ground)
Sorry for making such a long post, but im really frustrated and need to get this fixed as soon as possible. Thanks for any help and it is greatly appreciated.

Correct me if im wrong guys but a flashing SES light means muptiple misfires???If so it would explain the rough idle and maybe the smell aswell due to fuel not being burned properily. It could be opti, wires, plugs or coil..check them all and hope it's nothing serious. Good luck man

just started it up this morning and am still having same problem....the smell kind smells like gasoline now. What could have up and died that quickly with no warning signs??anyone help?

Get the codes scanned at an AUTO ZONE near you then come on back to here and post what code or codes you have, my guess is PO300 (multi cyl random misfires) Then we can help you alot more.
That sounds like an opti. If your having a multiple cyl misfire, then its not getting proper spark, or no spark at all to certin cylinders. The opti controls that doesnt it? Only other thing I can think of is a bunch of bad plugs/wires and MAYBE a bad coil wire. Before you go spending cash on this stuff, check out ALL your fuses, see if any are busted. My friend has the same problem, and it ended up being a burnt fuse. I know its weird, but it dont cost anything to check
Let us know.

Check your spark plugs and wires. You may have burned the silicon or just wore through the wire due to old age. It's a good possibility that your grounding out against the block and not getting that spark to the plugs. Or you could have a faulty plug. Hopefully this is your problem.
well what happens is when the ses light is flashing while u drive, its giving you the excact cylinder misfire, (if thats the case) in my case i was gettin a po305 (cyl #5 misfire) and if i scanned it while flashing it was that, but if i waited til it stopped flashing it became a po300 with no po305 in the scanner at all. I'd say you got either a burnt plug wire or two, blown fuse somewhere or you fuel pump/ or pressure reg is crapped out, But i'd head with the plug wires first, do you have headers? stock wires?

ok, stock manifolds, original plugs and wires as far as i know. I work at autozone so when i went to work today i tested it and it was a p0300 (random/multiple cylinder misfire) I bought a fuel filter which im bout to install and will check all my fuses. I also bought a new optima battery...but that had nothing to do with my problem (we get a bigger discount this weekend so i said what the hell and got it.). Thanks for the replies so far and i will let you all know what happens.

Since its PO300 and with your low mileage, I'm gonna say its a bad plug or plug wire, Check the coil wire first.. If you have time, Start the car when its dark as hell out and pop the hood, Look for arching (spark jumpin off wire to another wire or the block) PO300 is a pain in the *** code.. If you scan the car when it flashes, it'll tell you the excact cylinder misfire. Good Luck!

wow........now im kinda pissed......i thought the fuel filter change would be a piece of cake....in 99.9% of the time it would be, but my stinking filter was like rusted tight to the screw on part of the fuel line. I tried for like half an hour to get that damn thing off with no luck. In the process i twisted the fuel line and it is kind of kinked now. So now im gonna have to replace the line.........question is......does anyone know where i can get a pre bent fuel line from the filter to where it mates to the rubber piece (i think its like 4 feet long, but not real sure) Napa.....Dealership????? anyone know.......anyone ever replaced that pipe, it doesnt really seem to hard to do, but who knows.
