Exclamation I need help with my car please!

I have a 1997 z28 camaro. I was driving down the road and it just suddenly died. I checked the coil and the opti. I just changed my plugs and I dont know what it could be. This is my first camaro and I don't really know that much about it. Please help! I would really appreciate it

Have you scanned it for codes? Have you checked the fuel pressure?

How did you "check" the Opti? Did you check the IC module?

Most likely the ignition module, its on the same bracket as the coil.

Any other symptoms? Does the dash light up normally? Does it crank? The more detail, the better people can help.

I just pulled the wire off the opti that goes to the coil and I put a plug on it and cranked it and it was sparking I had power to everrhing else and it would still turn over just not start. I haven't hooked it up to any machines to check it out. Would it just die if it was the icm?

The ICM receives the signal to fire from the PCM, and fires the coil. If you have spark, you have 1/2 of what you need.

Now check the fuel pressure.

And it still needs to be scanned for codes.

Ive always had problems with my car i had a similar one like this and it turned out to be my opti. You can test an opti by letting it warm up once warmed and sitting at idle it will usually die. So im asking if when it died did you just start driving the car maybe ten ten minutes or less. When this happened to my my rpms started jumping everywhere and it suddenly died at about fifty miles an hour. I let it cool off for about three hours came back and it started up again and died when i pullled into my garage at idle. I replaced the ignition module and that was not it and then someone gave me this same advice and they were right. But overall i had no codes shown, should have i guess but it didnt show one code. As mentioned before this hopefully its just your ignition module. Good luck bud

Not a particularly accurate test.... and would not show up many of the Opti problems. A slightly more accurate approach:

Note that this info is already on Shoebox's site.

And don't forget that problems with the optical sensor will set trouble codes.

Have you checked to see if your fuel pump is turning on? It could be something as simple as a blown fuse or a bad relay. If you have already proven spark, fuel would be my next move....

So you checked the spark at the coil, what about at the plugs??

Yea the fuel pump was the first thing I checked for I just put a new one in it. And I don't think that it's the opti because I drove it for like 3 seconds and it died and it's pretty cold here so it cooled down and I tried to start and nothing. I'm taken it to one of my budies shops to get it scanned for codes

No I didn't check at the plugs. But I figured if my coil and opti have spark, my plugs would. But I'll go check real fast

Does it have fuel pressure? Does it have fuel? I personally do not trust the fuel estimator, which GM calls a fuel gauge. Not trying to be a SA, just something else to check.

Smile start and run

all the advice you have bee given is good and you have spark and no codes ,looks like the one thing that you have over look is your fuel ,gas filter how long has it been from last changed and you say it cold wear you are.also safety switch so you cant start in gear till catch it just right, had jeep that would die going down road and not start and and and aura had fuel filter that would not run because it would freeze up at times
