I got car problems..

Like the title says, I just got my Lt1 2 weeks ago. Its ran great until a few days ago. It seems like when it warms up it starts missing or something. Also it seems to drink more gas when its doing this. But heres the funny thing, it only does it every other time i drive it seems like. I was thinking maybe a dead cylinder since it was missing and I could smell gas when it done it, but Im not really sure. I could probably figure it out sooner or later, but since most of you have owned your car longer than me and know more about them I figured I would ask you all and maybe you could point me in the right direction? Any help is much appreciated!! Thanks!!

Sorry but there is no magic bullet. Find out if you have a dead cylinder first.

Get the codes read may be O2 sensors or it could be anything, but many times the car will tell you what is wrong

Ive got a code reader, but havent hooked it up to it yet. I know im loosing water, and my friend said the lt1's are bad to have the water pump go out in them. I think I may have a leak there and its getting the distributor wet maybe?? Ill update you all as soon as I can tho once I figure something out!

Re: I got car problems..

You need to add a "Signature" with basic info about your car - year, model, engine, trans and any major mods. You just reduce your chances of getting the correct answers if you don't supply this info. Not all years of the LT1 are the same.

Hopefully you do not have the Actron 9001 "GM code reader". It won't work on your 94. It just shorts the ALDL pins, to flash the codes on the SES light. 93 was the last year that would work.If you can't find the correct OBD-I scanner, consider scanning software, like TTS DataMaster or Freescan. All you need is a cable and a laptop, and you have an extremely useful diagnostic tool, that goes way beyond "code reading".

Re: I got car problems..

Yup...^^

I use Freescan with my car and it has been extremely helpful over the years when issues arise being able to figure out what is going on- I think I spent about $50 on the cable almost 10 years ago now which I thought was a little high at the time but considering a code reader that is anything more than basic costs more than that its def worth it.

BTW- Freescan does WAY more than just read back codes to you- it will give you access to everything the computer is seeing. You can't tune with it, just basic things- but it is very helpful- even when the SES light isn't on and your car is acting up, if you know what to look for it makes all the difference.

Re: I got car problems..

not to steal the thread but i cant scan my 94, ive tried the innova can obd1&2 scanners at schucks orielly. is this normal, or maybe i have a issue.
i wanted to solder in a usb cable to my aldl but cant find anyone whos done it without the cable. i know the serial cable uses a chip but the usb aldl cables ive seen dont look like they do.
so what scanners work and dont work on 94?

Re: I got car problems..

If the scanner did not communicate, check the cig lighter fuse. It's on the same circuit as the diagnostic port.

Re: I got car problems..

It's not really weird, it is OBDI. Many OBDII LT1s convert to OBDI because it is easier and cheaper to tune.

Re: I got car problems..

The 93-94's don't pull power from the cigarette lighter fuse. Thats for the OBD-II cars and the screwed up 95.
