hypertech programmer vs. custom made chip

okay so my question is will the hypertech be able to adjust to my catback mid length headers, cai, .030 over bore, .492 lift hotcam. or will i be better of buying one of those custom made chips off ebay from harris performance or does anyone reccomend something else? ( looking for a good deal on one also)

The Hypertech for OBD-I doesn't really offer any tuning options.... you can install the weak, generic "performance program" that comes with the unit, but that's barely adequate for a stock engine. It isn't going to be suitable at all for what you have in mind. The OBD-II models offered a slot for "custom" tuning modules, that Hypertech would make for you, but you can't use those - and I doubt they were very good.

Go mail order, as the others have suggested.

Go with a custom tune. I had a hypertech back when my car was stock and it was garbage.

My car never slowed down, but it never gained anything either with the "performance tuning" installed. I even emailed them 6 or 7 years ago and even THEY confirmed that their tuning is for stock or nearly stock vehicles. I believe they do sell custom tuning if you send them your mods list, but that's even more money out of your pocket after the purchase of one of their units.

I also dyno'd mine once with and without the tuning installed and the power/torque lines were nearly identical on the graph.

About the only good things you can gain out of the unit itself is the raised RPM limiter, trans adjustments (if you've got an auto), fan temp settings, and adjustments for a gear ratio change.
