Hub not on all the way? Shredding belts! Help!

I just tore up a week old belt yesterday and am a little confused. It first started when i was putting a new starter in and noticed my belt was half way off the crank hub but on all the other pulleys fine. So i hit it with an impact and drove it in until i couldint see the wear marks anymore. Bought a new belt and all was well. So i was driving yesterday and heard a loud nocking noise comming from the passanger side of the motor, scared the hell out of me to say the least. I pulled over to check it out and part of the belt was flying around slapping my hood. It was also allmost half way off the crank pulley, off the A/C delete pulley and alternator. So i put the belt back on track and the same thing happened today, so its like the belt is half the width now. Anyways im not sure what to do now. I dont want to take a chance on snapping the balancer hub bolt driving it in with an impact again and their no reason all the other pulleys would be off center. Will the damaged belt hold up fine? Or should i try hitting it with an impact again and drive it in a little more? I dont know how hard thoes hub bolts are to snap. I dont know what i would do if that happened. What should i do?!

I would check the alignment of the pulleys.

Are you saying your harmonic dampener is slowly working it's way off? Rather than tightening the bolt are you jus thitting the dampener back on? If you are just smacking the dampener back on you need to tighten down the hub bolt or it's gunna keep slipping off.

I had the same problem, too! I had replaced the belt and the tensoiner. The tensioner wasa off centerabout an 1/8" or less. it was enough to pull the belt off center. Which, shoved it into the alt fan. After that happen 3 times I when back to the stock one, no more trouble.

I sounds like you are having other troubles, but it might be worth looking into.

Well, when i had the hub off i didnt put it back on all the way. After i noticed the belt was half way off i hit it with an impact until i couldint see the wear marks anymore. So it could still be off a tad but im not sure if i should take an impact to it again. The only things that i had off were, alternator, hub, A/C delete, and the tention pulley. My alternator has a bad bearing so is it possible thats off? I will try buying a new tention pulley from auto zone tomorrow. What should i do about the crank hub though? I havent seen anyone that has snapped a hub bolt. Impact again?

id like to know what your solution is. i had the same prob and just ran a belt that is half the thickness.

i would be careful using the impact again. i have heard that if you strip the threads in the crank then you have to pull the crank to repair it. i dont know if thats true but that is what i heard.

You aren't supposed to use the crank bolt to pull the pulley on. Good luck if you strip anything, because it is a major headache.
A hub installation tool uses a hardened threaded rod with a thrust washer and a nut to pull the hub on. It's not hard to make something similar, yourself.

Just buy one from autozone, they are fairly cheap. As for the hub, if you only drove it till the wear marks were gone, you may need to drive it a little more. my hub sits recessed in to the timing cover.

the belt held fine for about 2500 miles. im sure it would have held longer but i pulled the motor and i am now rebuilding it. whenever i did get on it i could see my voltage drop as if the belt was slipping.

good luck
