Hub and Crank Bolt Question

If the hub is pressed on and the balancer is on the lip of the hub, what is the point of the crank bolt?

It seems the crank bolt isn't holding anything on. I'm pulling the hub and balancer today and putting on a new timing chain.

Do I need to pull the crank bolt?
If so, what technique works on an LT1?

The hub won't come off unless you remove the crank bolt. Also, the hub is somewhat pressed on, but would work its way off without the bolt.

It's on there pretty good. Any trick to getting the bolt off? And, did you mean leave the bolt on or off? Thanks.

Leverage and a 6 point socket. Not sure why you think it is not holding anything on. The hub is not like the SBC balancer on the end.

Here's all you need to know about removing and reinstalling your crank hub http://www.cz28.com/forums/showthrea...nk+hub+removal. Be careful with the threads in the crank.

If you use a breaker bar and 6pt socket, like Shoe said, the bolt shouldn't be too hard to get loose.

After looking at the pic it makes sense. Thank you everyone for your help. I wasn't being a smartie, but I have never done this before so I wasn't sure what was pressed on and what wasn't.

Shbox's website has a lot of good info.

I'll use the hardened bar-stock to get the hub off as in that reference thread. I don't want to booger up the threads on the crank.
