Question howling from the rear ?

hi guys
wanted to ask if any of you know what this could be, I had a rear end put in about
45 days ago, everything there is fine, has a very low whine, not worried about that.

what I've notice is that around 40 mph I
will hear a howling sound from the rear, as soon as i reach around 42 to 43 mph the howling goes away, any idea what this be?

before the gear change i had a stock 2.73
thanks
zoso

mine is doing the same thing after the 3.73 install. Around 40 to 45 mph it gets a little whine, not bad. I'm going to wait a while, see what is does after about 500 miles and a fluid change. Most people say you have to break in new gears for about 500 miles or so. Not sure if thats true or not.

I first swapped in 4.10s and they were very noisy mainly deacclerating. I asked the very good rear shop that installed them why? He said G.M. laps the gears so they run quietly mine were cheap gears.I put about 15,000 hard miles on them with out a problem. I've since installed a name brand 3.73 for autocrossing by same shop and they are very quiet! so i guess you get what you payfor!now my wife will drive the car, before she was afraid the rear would blow!

The howling of the rearend is a pretty common problem when not setup properly. I have had a set of Strange Gears in my car and never had a problem with howling. On the other hand every set of Richmond gears that I have heard whine like crazy.

thanks for your comment, I really don't think you can say that the gears where not properly installed, the shop i went to the guys hads a great reputation for doing gears, and from what I've read on the post here, alot of after market gears whine, I guess its a crap shoot on how much they whine.

and i also found out this week the gm laps there gears for a more quite gear(grinding), wher as after market gears are machine for
cost purposes.
but thanks for your input.

when I do my gear oil change in a month I'll see if it quites the howling. I will also be using something called ( whale sperm) to
help remove the howling sound.
