Howling gears when decelerating...
In the event that you improperly install the pinion and over-crush the crush collar and then back off the pinion nut, you'll have a similar effect (noise only on decel). The nut itself will slooooowly back off over the course of a couple hundred miles.
With this the whining sound will get louder to the point where it happens all the time and inproportion to speed and acceleration. This is because the pinion is actually pivoting within the housing. You'll be able to grab the yoke and actually wiggle it
...
If the sound doesn't get worse, leave it alone. If it does, you'll need to replace the crush collar (or at least put some english on the pinion nut in the mean time).

Makes you wonder how they can do it at the factory, eh? A new car's gears are quiet and you can bang on them quite a bit. They only get noisy after age or severe abuse. The point is, why does noise have to be acceptable?
if it makes noise something is not right. You say he changed the back lash after you drove it for a couple of miles? You have already caused improper wear on the gears after that time. Also you would need a new crush sleeve if he backed the pinion nut off. What was the pinion pre-load set to? you saying you only hear the problem on decel makes it sound like the wear paterns would be wrong on the concave side of the gear(coast side). This is how it was explained to me by my teacher who was a trans/drive line tech at gm for 13 years.
i have strange 3.73 series 2
they have always howled VERY loud on decel, had the reputable shop double check, turned out perfect, he even called strange himself, they told him the series 2 3.73 was known to be a loud gear, nothing could be done about it.....
my gears has been in the car for 5000 miles, 15 track passes, i run DR, i havent really tested the rear out, my best sixty foot time is 2.06.....
although recently after racing season they whine a little on accel and cruise but nothing really bad....
the howling on decel is so loud you cant hear the radio,or talk, very annoying, it has been the way since day one.....
jad

I've got Strange 3.73's for the 2 series as well. There is some noise on decell, but it's not horrendous. I've put a few thousand on the car since the install, did the gear oil & diff fluid change within about 150 miles of it as well. I got about as much noise as I was expecting since these are supposed to be 'performance' gears. Something to do with the way they're cut? Not sure. But based on my experience, what you've got going on sounds normal to me.
Shoebox does raise a good point though. Why should there be any noise at all? Maybe some GM gears would've been totally quiet.. dunno. Nature of the beast sometimes maybe.

The wear pattern on the gears when he took them out was perfect.. only after driving a few miles. He changed the backlash (not pinion depth) only to try to quiet them down a bit.. I doubt two miles of wear would cause a wrong pattern so quickly.. I've heard of people taking their gears out and resetting them to get them right and haven't had problems.
I really don't know at this point. I think I'll just deal as is and see how it goes along. If it freakin' blows up.. oh well, $500 in parts and labor down the ****ing hole.. it sucks, but what am I going to do at this point?? Noise doesn't bother me, like I said, it's not so loud that I can hear it with the radio on or the windows down.. hell, or over my exhaust. IMO as far as having a perfectly quiet gear goes.. I imagine that is really only possible with a set of genuine GM gears.. but, supposedly you give up strength for that right?
Eddie.. if all goes well I'll be hitting the track tomorrow and hopefully cutting some low 1.7's as usual for some testing. When I get back I'll give you a heads up.

i guess that its "strange" that Strange gears make the noise like that sometimes
but i think i have gm motive gears and they do the same thing... they whine when decelerating... it doesnt bother me... but it is very noticable since i only have stock exhaust... well cept the headers
