how to test the fuel pump ?

I got a 97' SS and I think my pump went bad but I don't know how to test for it. I would just replace it but it's not cheap, like 400$ so if anybody could help I would appreciate it

A fuel pressure test gauge attached to the fuel rail schrader valve is the only way. Stock pressure should be 41-47 psi at idle with the vacuum line removed from the regulator.
