how to tell if O2 sensor is bad

I just pulled my header and checked the 02 sensor (damn blown head gasket ). How can you tell if it is good? I had an exhaust leak I didn't know about on that side and the back of the o2 (faceing the muffler) is carbon covered while the front (facing front of car) is white. Is that normal?

A scan tool such as Diacom can be used to verify the O2's. The sensor should cycle rapidly between 100 and 900 mV. Dead sensors will read a constant 450 mv; worn sensors will slowly cycle. If you have 50K+ miles on them, I'd suggest you just replace them. As they "wear", they cause you to burn rich and eat gas mileage.
