Why don't you try cleaning it first? (Take out, take apart, and clean tiny sensors) They have MAF cleaner at most auto stores.

My car ran like new after cleaning it.

Post more info on your problem. $400 is absolutely ridiculous.

What was the problem that caused you to take it to the shop?

Was the SES light on? Did they do a PCM scan, and advise you of the specific codes they found? If not, how did they determine the MAF sensor (if that's what they mean by "mass airflow intake") needed to be replaced?

You can install an MAF sensor yourself, in about 10 minutes, with no tools other than a screwdriver. The cost of a new MAF sensor should be a fraction of the $400 they quoted you.

You need to clarify with them - what are they replacing? The "intake" is the entire air system, from the inlet air box/filter, to the throttle body. The "mass airflow" sensor is one compenent in that system.

about a month ago, these are a list of the repairs that I had done:
tune up-replaced water pump distributor/rotor plugs wires crank censor
replaced radiator and replaced intake manifold
Everything was running fine until a little over a week ago. When accelerating it had a hesitation or dead spot. It would turn over but wouldn't start. A friend of mine took off the air filter and sprayed carb cleaner up through it and it started right up. Then I was driving and it died three times. It acted like it lost complete gas pressure.
So I took it back to the shop and they are saying that it is the mass air flow intake. All help is appreciated.

if that's exactly what they said, "mass air flow intake" then they need to go get certified. they're either saying you need a whole new intake setup, which you more than likely never will, or just the mass aif flow assembly, which should never ever cost $400 to do on a 96 camaro. try taking it off with screwdrivers and spray cleaning it with cleaner from autozone etc

Could be as simple as a torn rubber inlet elbow. Check for tears, and possibly the bottom edge of the elbow not pushed fully on the throttle body.

Has anyone checked the fuel pressure?

Don't be spraying "carb cleaner" on anything. Its way too harsh. There is an anti-coking coating on the throttle body blades that can be removed by carb cleaner. Use "throttle body cleaner".

Dude clean your mass air flow sensor too. The cleaner spray is cheap, make sure it's one made specifically for that though

400 bucks to install a new MAF? Are they supplying the lube, or do they expect you to bring your own? If you do end up needing a replacement, you can buy a new one for a fraction of 400 bucks and install it yourself. It would be difficult to screw it up.
