connect line to the none pressured side(the one with the fatest tubing) start car put a/c on full blast. Start filling and watch the guage. Can't tell you about the gauge because everyone is different.

I'd like to know about this too.

Let me know if you find out what the gauges should read.

I have filled R12 systems like my old truck and I put a hot washcloth on the can and it went right in as I alternated can from right side up to upside down.

If freon won't go in, then it must be full, someone told me once over-filling a system can be dangerous.

The correct way to do it is evacuate the system with a vacuum pump and then refill.

Also why is your system that low that it needs a whole can?

Leak???

Oh, and you can get one of those a/c gauges at most of the auto parts stores.

Does the compressor come on when you turn AC on?
It needs to be running when you fill..
If not on jump it at the relay in the underhood box.

Pull AC relay in the underhood box, and jump B1 to B4

disconnect the battery for 5 mins to reset the computer before filling because the computer will lockout the a/c system if there was low or high pressure or if it sensed any other problem in the sytem

your taking your chances refilling your own freon for several reasons...first, you have to ask why its low to begin with. There must be a leak somewhere, and all that new stuff you just bought is going to leak out too. Then you have to worry about freon pressure, moisture in the lines, pulling the proper vacuum....you really are better off taking it to a dedicated AC repair shop.
