Rebuild what? The engine? To what extent? If you are talking about a complete teardown and rebuild then you need to solicite some professional help unless you have done it before. If you just talking cam/heads replacement then you might be able to do it depending on your mechanical ability

Re: how to rebuild?

i havent done any mods to the car, and to what extend all depends on how far i have to go to fix my problem (of very low oil pressure causing surging and or low RPMS - or vice versa) other then that theres nothing wrong, but i got two people telling me that i need a rebuild to fix that problem.

thanks

Re: how to rebuild?

For those who are looking for a stock rebuild and who don't work on it themselves, the best approach is a remanufactured motor from a national or large regional rebuilder with a warranty. A motor from GM (AC/Delco) is a bit more expensive, but you can figure it is nearly as good as the one you had in the car in the first place.

From http://www.acdelco.com/parts/engines/: ACDelco offers a limited 36–month/36,000–mile parts and labor warranty for passenger car and light–duty truck engines. This national warranty protection gives you coverage throughout the United States at any ACDelco Engine outlet. In addition, ACDelco allows you to transfer your warranty to a new owner, at no additional charge, should you choose to sell your vehicle. For more details on this outstanding warranty plan, see your local retailer.

The other extreme is tearing it down and just replacing stuff that is obviously bad or a wear item (rings/bearings).

Re: how to rebuild?

Give some more details about your oil pressure problem. What is your pressure when you are are at idle?? Automatic or 6 speed? What does it climb to when you rev it up? These Fbodys are known for oil pressure that dips at idle and then goes up at revs

Re: how to rebuild?

well lets say i were to go jump in my car right this second, the oil pressure will go up about half way (where i feel comfortable it being) then it doesnt drop untill i pull up to a stop light and sit there, then it'll desend about 1/8 of the guage, and then i pull away from the light and it goes up 1/16 of the guage, next stop light goes down another 1/8 of the gauge, and so on and so forth.

when i first turn on the car it idles at about 950 rpms with pressure normal, after about 30-45 minutes of driving it idles about a 500 rpms with oil pressure JUST above the red line.

its an automatic 4 speed.

and if i drive it for too long when it starts to do the surging, (at stop lights) when i go to pull away from the stop light, it starts to feel like its going to die at about 2000 rpms, and if i smash on it then it "flutters" around 2000 rpms for a couple seconds then WOTs

any ideas?

Re: how to rebuild?

The fluctuating oil pressure is somewhat normal. And the pressure readings will change once the oil gets hot. It tends to thin out. When you are stopped at idle is should dip down to somewhere in the 20 - 40 range. When you first start it and it's cold you will get a higher pressure because the oil is thicker. As for the stumble, it could be a number of things but when it hesitates and the engine stutters the oil pressure will react accordingly. I doubt that the oil pressure and the stumble have any connection other than when the engine stumbles and slows the oil pressure drops. You need to find the source of the stumble first. And again, it could be number of things. If you do a search you will find dozens of discussions about the same thing.

Re: how to rebuild?

The idle (500) seems a little on the low side. Is it still on the original plugs? Air filter? Wires? How does the oil look? Change with some synthetic 5w-30. If the oil is old it will run a little thinner (less pressure) than fresh stuff. LT1's run a loooong time if they are maintained properly. My oil pressure dips just below the 1/4 mark when idling with the motor warmed.

Re: how to rebuild?

i just put in new plugs, as far as i know the air filters old, the plugs are old, and the oil is pretty clean and i change it every 2500 miles (well for the past 5000 miles i have) and i used 20w-50 (i believe) castrol synthetic for the last change so thats what its running on now. should i take it to the shop and see if they can pinpoint it?

Re: how to rebuild?

Check the oil again. Seems a little thick. Most run in the 10W30 to 10W40 range. You can take it somewhere and have it checked but know thaqt they charge a lot to do it especially since it could take some time to track it down. Do you have any way of doing it yourself? Know anyone that could hook up and scan it for you? That way you can compare the readings with what should be normal and hopefully pinpoint the problem

Re: how to rebuild?

I doubt it needs rebuilt. And, don't use 20w50 motor oil. That's too thick. Find the source of your surging and your car should be fine. As long as the oil pressure is around 40 psi cruising, you'll be alright.
