How to PROPERLY wash the engine bay/undercaridge w/o taking out the opti
Hey guys,
I recently picked up a '95 bird. Its in good shape, but has the typical pinon and intake seal leaks. I'm going to be fixing them as soon as I get home on days off. But I want to wash the engine bay and undercaridge of the car well, both before and after I do the repairs. What do you guys do to wash the car w/o getting the opti wet. I guess my one option is once the block is drained and intake off, I could pull the water pump and pull the opti and then wash everything in detail, and reassembly with my CSI electric I have sitting in the garage.
Other then pulling the opti though, what do you guys recommend for a "safe" wash.
Opti works good and the previous owner says he never washed the engine bay. Looks like he's telling the truth, car is mint, but has about 11 years worth of dust/dirt/builup on it. Car has 60,000 miles.
Thanks,
Igor.

Re: How to PROPERLY wash the engine bay/undercaridge w/o taking out the opti
last time i did it i crawled up under the car and put a plastic bag around it and tried not to spray it directly. even tho my opti survived, my throttle position sensor did not, but thats much cheaper and easier to replace than an opti.
Re: How to PROPERLY wash the engine bay/undercaridge w/o taking out the opti
Cool, I have spare everything except the opti. My '94 car got crashed by my friend a few years ago, still have the complete car, but the underside is destroyed. All the upside sensors still work/are good. I think I'm gonna avoid the motor, but want to get the back side of the block and strut towers and undercaridge.
Re: How to PROPERLY wash the engine bay/undercaridge w/o taking out the opti
I just used some engine degreaser, under my hood. It worked fine just dont rub in one spot for too long or the paint with start to come off
Re: How to PROPERLY wash the engine bay/undercaridge w/o taking out the opti
Get some Simple Green and a wash cloth and rub everything you want clean. But when you rinse it off just try to avoid hitting the opti directly. I washed mine with some engine degreaser once, sprayed it off and it would not start for about 9 hours. I use Simple Green whenever i want to clean it up now and have had no problems out of it.
Re: How to PROPERLY wash the engine bay/undercaridge w/o taking out the opti
My advice is to just use the hose with no nozzle and some pray on degreaser. Then use a wash cloth on any stubborn spots left. Thats how i detail my cars.

Washed mine many times and drove through lots of puddles(some 2 ft deep). Ive never had a prob with the stock 110k opti...but i wouldn't spary it directly.
