How much should i pay for a cam install?

I'm contemplating haveing a cam put in my 97 Z28. I called 2 shops, the first wants $700, and they are pretty well known and do alot of work on f-bodies, but i have heard a few bad stories. The other shop which i trust and have had work done by wants $800. Both prices dont include the price of gaskets and fluids, so do the prices seem reasonable? the price for both also includes installing new springs and 1.6 RR's.
Also what cam would you recommend for a bolt on car? i dont plan on have a set of heads put on any time soon. This car is my daily driver and ONLY car.
Which cam would you recommend, the CC306, or the CC305? are there any better ones for a basic bolt on car? I want the best bang for my buck since its going to cost me alot to have installed. How much HP can you gain from a mild cam upgrade?
thanks for the help

when i had my lt4 h/c kit done it was about 750 with gaskets and all that. which is less than i would charge for working on one of these cars.lol both prices seem good id go with the one that has the better reputation. as far as cam if i done it over again i would have gone bigger but its not a daily driver.

ya i know what your talking about, its my daily driver, but i live in DC and have a ton of people that can give me rides to places. I just dont want a cam thats SO huge that i cant drive it on the street, plus i dont want a cam so big that its over kill for a bolt on car.
I'm leaning twards the CC306. weres the best place to get the cam, RR's and springs? Sumitt?
as far as the RR's and springs what are the best for the CC 306?

bah, do it yourself. Send me $200 of the dollars you save. You'll learn a ton about your car and will probably be able to fix some of the problems that arrise later yourself.

i really wish i had the time and place to do it, but I'm in the Navy and work 10-11 hour days, 5-6 days a week. Since i live in the Barracks i cant do it int he parking lot, cause they will yell at you for installing a stero.

Id say that price sounds good to me too. i havent done an LT1 cam for a customer, but Ive put one in my own car and its a BIOTCH to say the least. and for a first timer forget it unless you have tons of time and can be w/o a car if something goes wrong, or you didnt order something, or whatever. its def. worth it for someone like you to just pay to get it done.
but anyways sounds like a good shop price.

Re: How much should i pay for a cam install?

there is one, but as long as its going to take me to do it myself its not worth it, the only way i'd think about doing it myself is to have my own garage back home. They have really weird hours, that totally conflict with my working hours. If you cant finish, and leave the car their they charge you from the time they open till when they close, and since i can only work on it a couple hours a day, i'd waste a ton of money there. I'm sure if i did it myself it'd take well over a month to do, and i cant got hat long without a car.

Piece of cake. I'd do it for $150 if you were local. $200 with spring swap included. Once you know the tricks and have all the nifty tools its really simple.

Go with the LT4 hotcam kit... around $500 from Jason Cromer. FWIW I charged a guy I know $250 to install a hotcam kit and would do it again.
